On February 28, 2023, Joyce Dee Carr, passed away at age 88.
Joyce is survived by her husband of 60 years, Jim Carr, and her three sons Roger (Michelle), Larry (Barbara) and Daniel (Emily), and seven grandchildren.
Joyce was born on March 7, 1934, in Fresno, CA to Dee and Katherine Sims. She graduated from University of California, Berkeley, in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. From 1959 through 1962, she worked as a Social Worker in Fresno County, CA.
When President John F Kennedy asked the question, “how many of you would be willing to serve your country and the cause of peace by living and working in the developing world?” Joyce said, “Send Me” and signed up to serve in the Peace Corps in 1962. She served in Peru where she ran a program “Food for Peace,” feeding families and children and increasing school attendance levels.
It was in Peru that she met Jimmy Carr, another Peace Corps volunteer. They were married in 1963 in Arequipa, Peru.
Following their service, they returned to the United States and began a life in Southern California. Joyce returned to her career as a Social Worker in Los Angeles County while Jim finished college.
Roger Carr was born in1967, while they lived in Inglewood, CA. Soon after, IBM recruited Jim, and they moved to San Jose, CA. In 1969, Larry Carr was born.
They bought property and built the family home in the Paradise Valley area of Morgan Hill, CA, and in 1972, Daniel Carr was born.
Joyce loved her family, her church, her friends, and her community. She served three terms (12 years) on the Morgan Hill Unified School District Board of Education. She was a community volunteer, a lay leader in her church, a substitute teacher, a founding member of AAUW Morgan Hill and the beloved matriarch of the family.
Joyce will be remembered for many things, including: her wit, her kindness and generosity, her faith, and her love of family. She enjoyed nothing more than just being surrounded by all of her family and sharing in that love.
A Memorial service will be held on April 15, 2023, at 11:00am, at Advent Lutheran Church in Morgan Hill, Ca.
In lieu of giving flowers, the family asks that those who are able instead donate to Advent Lutheran Church.
