David was born on January 26th 1948 in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, the third of six children, to Patricia and Kenneth Puffer. As a self proclaimed late bloomer, he grew up playing many sports, but his favorites included waterskiing, ice skating and skiing; which he retired early from following a near death accident that left him forever hard of hearing.
He attended The University of Minnesota for his undergraduate degree and The University of Chicago where he received his MBA in Healthcare. Working as a hospital administrator in Chicago, he pursued a colleague named Margaret until she finally relented and married him. Together they moved from Boston, to San Francisco, to Minneapolis, and eventually landed in Laguna Beach in 1986 where they raised their family.
Working for many years in Healthcare, he took summers to drive his two kids in a truck with a camper, to every National Park west of the Mississippi. He was an avid Twins, Vikings, and Gopher fan, a Saab snob, lover of good food, great music, a firm believer in science, a social justice advocate and could talk anyone’s ear off. He knew a little bit about everything, a lot about some things, could fix just about anything (after a few trial and errors), was stubborn, kind, funny, loving and the best, proudest Grandpa there ever was.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Puffer, daughter Nissa Puffer, son Noel Puffer (Katrina), Granddaughter Grace Puffer, Grandson Max Puffer, four Puffer brothers, Jim (Louiva), Steve (Janet), Don (Judy), John (Kathy), sister Barb Norman (Dale), and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and several beloved cattle dogs.
