Born in Taishan, China, Joe spent most of his life in San Francisco, where he built a life grounded in curiosity, dedication, and quiet joy. A proud graduate of UC Berkeley, Joe was the university’s first-ever double major — a testament to his passion for learning and his forward-thinking spirit. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1964 to 1966 and was honorably discharged.
He enjoyed doing all-day walks from Golden Gate Park all the way to Ocean Beach and back. He was also a talented painter who rediscovered peace in his brushstrokes during his battle with cancer and a lover of cruises who embraced the joy of travel.
Joe was a proud father to Tony Eng and Helen Kubit, and a proud grandfather to Logan (18), Lana (17), and Maxwell Eng (17), and Connor (15), Maia (12), and Kelsey Kubit (11). He was well loved by his in-laws Clarisa Eng and Paul Kubit and his ex-wife Monita Eng. His love and quiet strength shaped the lives of his family in ways that will live on for generations. He is preceded in death by his father, Robert Eng, and mother, Stella Eng, and his brother, Steven Eng.
Joe’s legacy is one of wisdom, confidence, and rationality — a life well lived and explored.
A private service will be held with close family and, according to his wishes, his ashes will be scattered in San Diego bay. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Joe by enjoying a making a donation to Girls, Inc.
“It is not length of life, but depth of life.”
