April 17, 1930 – August 19, 2023
Don Voll was born in Santa Monica, California, on April 17, 1930, to Norman T. and Opal Deloras Voll. The oldest of two sons, his brother was Richard Grandfield Voll. Don lived his entire life in the greater Los Angeles area. He met the love of his life on a blind date arranged by his best friend Bob, and married Ila Faye Johnson on July 2, 1950. They resided in Southern California since then.
Don is survived his four children Terri, Robert, Stacey, and Jayme; seven grandchildren Jessica, Jared, Taylor, Kyle, Kori, Jack, and Jenna; and five great-grandchildren Kaylinn, Mellody, Levi, Ledger, and John. He was preceded by his parents, brother, wife of 70 years, and grandson Nathan.
Don was always serving others. He joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War as a part of the VC-35 Composite Squadron, AD Skyraider, VAN Team #6, upon the USS Bon Homme Richard, Task Force 77, where he received the Enlisted Combat Aircrew Roll of Honor. He worked at Sam Yocum Incorporated for 47 years, first sweeping the warehouse after school as a teen, and then after the war serving his clients as the most honest office furniture salesman who ever lived. He spent 9 years of his life as the Los Altos High School Marching Band’s biggest fan and served as Band Booster President for two years in the late 1970s. Even in his final couple of years, he was the unofficial activities ambassador at Wildwood Canyon Villa Assisted Living. However, his most honorable accomplishment was serving his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and brother.
Don will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery on September 26, 2023, 11:00 am, with full military honors. The service is open to all family and friends. Flowers are allowed based on the guidelines posted on the cemetery’s website. In lieu of flowers, if anyone wishes to donate, the family suggests giving to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Michael J. Fox Foundation (for Parkinson’s research)—two organizations dear to Don’s heart. A Celebration of Life will commence immediately following the service at March Air Reserve Base, March Field Air Museum; lunch will be provided.
