Beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother and friend, Eileen Voorheis of Upland California, passed away after a brief illness on June 19th, 2024. Born to Norman and Matilda Weisz on June 1st, 1948, Eileen is fondly remembered by many in her wide circle of friends, family and community.
Eileen graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1966. Shortly afterward Eileen met her future husband, Irving Voorheis. She and Irving married in August of 1969 at the picturesque California Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey while Eileen was studying to get her Bachelor of Arts in English in 1971 and a Masters Degree in Education shortly thereafter.
Eileen spent the early years of their marriage as a private school and private teacher while making a beautiful home for her and Irving. When her two daughters were born she took joy in being a homemaker while working as a bookkeeper for her father’s business at the Hub Mart in Silverlake, California.
After moving to Alta Loma, California in 1987, Mrs. Voorheis began her long career as a teacher in the Alta Loma School District where she worked for 25 years at both Victoria Groves and Banyon Elementary Schools. She touched the lives of hundreds of students teaching mostly first grade, eventually earning her Administrative Credential and becoming an Assistant Principal before retiring in 2012. After retirement, Eileen continued supporting her colleagues and became a much sought after substitute teacher within the district until 2024.
Eileen had many interests outside of teaching and used them to show her love to others. Eileen was a renowned home cook and enjoyed creating delicious meals and especially chocolate desserts for her friends and family. She was active in her faith and her church communities at Life Bible Fellowship in Upland, California. She enjoyed crafting her homemade sourdough — many of her friends were the recipients of her award winning “Blue Ribbon” sourdough loaves. She performed as president of her local homeowners association. Eileen was an avid walker and walked several miles daily for most of her adult life, even finishing the Los Angeles Marathon one year.
Eileen was a wonderful example to her daughters and an ever present fixture for her grandchildren. She attended baseball games, volunteered in her grandchildren’s classrooms, made annual gingerbread houses (from scratch!) for the kids to decorate and planned many other memorable activities.
Eileen is survived by her husband Irving, her two daughters Tracy (Charles) Vasquez and Kristin (CJ) Davis, three grandchildren Evan Vasquez, Oliver Davis and Abigail Davis and her brother Robert Weisz.
A Celebration of Life has been planned for 11:00am on August 3rd, 2024 at Life Bible Fellowship Church in Upland, CA.
