I had the pleasure of working with Francis for 15 years.  There was no one more compassionate or focused on the well-being of those he served.  It was my privilege to call him my friend and fellow Marine.  He will be missed but his memory will be cherished.

Francis,  

You were the first Gunny I ever worked with, and the first mentor I ever had. As a kid overseas for the first time, I certainly needed a positive role model and you were that and more. The warm welcome I received from you and your family was unexpected but wonderfully impactful. You treated me as one of your own and it was a blessing for me. From Japan to 29 Palms to Barstow, I am grateful that our paths continued to cross and I was able to spend more time with you and learn from you over the years.
You didn’t know it and unfortunately I never told you: Your friendship and guidance helped mold a lost teenage boy, and later a young man, into the person I became. I owe a huge percentage of my successful career, and the life I now have, to you. 
Your influence has always been there, for over 30 years now and I am eternally grateful for all that you gave me and showed me, and everything you stood for. 
I genuinely have had a better life and am a better person for having known you. If I have a fraction of the positive impact you have had on so many people, I’ll consider myself a success. 

Your kindness, warmth, candor, laughter and wisdom will forever be missed.

I remember Francis for a few reasons.  He was a fellow Marine; he was continuing his service after retirement from active duty by serving as the Education Services Officer aboard MCAGCC while I was the Family Services Officer there; and he shared my father's first name.  He was steadfast to his country,  the Corps, and his family and friends.  He set a fine example for us.

I will always remember him as "Gunny" and although we have not seen or talked in years, I will never forget the impact you and your family have had on me. The man who saw a troubled young man headed the wrong way down a one way street of alcoholism.   He took me in and made me an honorary member of his family, often referring to me as an uncle to his children.  I spent the better part of a year in the company and grace of one of most gracious people and families a young Marine could ask for; a surrogate family that became a true family.   I will always be in your debt.  RIP Gunny.

Francis served as my Director of Lifelong Learning when I was Marine Corps Community Services Director. He was truly committed to the educational aspirations of all the Marines, Sailors, and family members on the base.  He had a wonderful sense of humor. Thank you Francis for your amazing contribution. God rest your soul.
