He was the beloved brother of the late Henry G. Cokash and his wife, the late Josephine Cokash, the late William A. Cokash and his wife, the late Rosemarie Cokash, and the late Carol A. Cokash. He is survived by his sister Martha (Cokash) Nelson, brother-in-law Bruce Nelson, and many nephews and nieces, as well as by many spiritual children and close friends who also loved him.
Jimmy worked for the Boston Globe for many years as a typesetter, which contributed to his skill as a Scrabble player. He loved music–he played both the acoustic and slide (steel) guitar, keyboard, and harmonica–and enjoyed telling a gentle joke or two. His sense of humor and knowledge of language fed his appreciation for plays on words.
James was a very loyal servant of Jehovah God as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses since 1960 and served for many years as an elder in various congregations. He truly embodied the qualities mentioned in
Galatians 5:22, 23:
“On the other hand, the fruitage of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control.”
Jim developed polio at a young age. Due to his health, he, Victoria, and Carol headed west in their RV in 1971, eventually settling a few blocks from the ocean in Oceanside, CA. In the facilities where Jim was treated for his illness, everyone could see what a wonderful person he was; for the last eight years, Jim resided in The Village in Hemet, a skilled nursing facility where he was dearly loved and will be missed.
Wherever Jim lived, he was known for his sweet smile and loving, gentle personality. Anyone who spent time with him experienced a warm sense of calm and peace.
"His creator had recorded for all his creation in"
Psalms 37:11 and 29:
“But the meek will possess the earth, And they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace. The righteous will possess the earth, And they will live forever on it.”
Jim truly took this promise to heart.
Jimmy often spoke about the future here on Earth when he would see beloved family members resurrected, and when he would be able to run for the first time.
