Jan and I were room mates for 3 years @ California hospital school of Nursing. We were in each others weddings and kept in touch for years. Our lives and Nursing careers were different, but always think of she and Wayne as good friends of my future husband, Bob, and me when we were in the program as well as our early Nursing years. She was devoted to her family her church and a dedicated nurse. I wish I had known of her passing.earlier.

I was saddened when Jan was first diagnosed, and didn't know she passed until yesterday, July 22.  I would have been honored to pay my respects, but we had lost touch with dustance and time. Jan was a loving wife and a loving and  wonderful mother. I got to know Jan a little bit when Paige was in high school. I know Jan took care of others, not only in her job, but she also took care of her sister, and her friends. She was a class act, a giving person.  Heaven is blessed with her presence, and earth is a little less bright. RIP Jan, you made a wonderful and positive difference in the world.

Jan was a very inspiring nurse and co-worker at Sharp  Memorial Hospital.

DEDICATED TO JANICE

I remember first meeting Janice at St. Luke's Lutheran Day School in 1973-1974. My two older sons were classmates of Janice's son Paul.  On that occasion, Janice informed me that my son Geoffrey and her son Paul were messing around in the classroom and Paul fell and hit his head on the table which caused a huge bump to form.  Subsequently, a friendship between our sons ensued and continued throughout Eighth grade when they parted ways and went to different high schools.  This friendship between our sons had a profound effect on myself and my children.
As a single working mother without any family in town, the Scherkenback's had a deep influence on my children and myself. They set an example of what I wanted to achieve in my personal and family life.   
Janice was eleven years older than I am. She was beautiful  both inside and outside.  She was intelligent, hard working, a leader, incredibly compassionate, and loving.  She treated my children as if they were her own.  They were always welcomed in her home. They love her so much that they have always called her mom and would constantly ask me why the Sherkenback's could not adopt them.  Geoffrey would tell me that she and Wayne would have prayers and bible study with them when they visited.  Janice and Wayne's reinforcement of the Christian principals helped give my children the foundation they needed to be successful. She is also the Godmother of my two youngest children.   
Janice achieved success in a world at a time when it was not easy for women to achieve status in the work field.  She not only worked at a job that demanded much of her, both physically and emotionally, but she also balanced the needs of her family with the demands of her job, and the responsibilities she accepted in her church. She set an example for me to follow. She showed us throughout her life that she was guided by her faith in the Lord by her actions, love, concern and care for others.
Although Alzheimer's disease eventually robbed Janice of her ability to speak, walk, or care for herself, it did not rob her of the incredible love of her husband, family, friends, and the Lord.  She did not waiver in her faith inspite of her affliction.  By example she has helped me increase the strength of my faith in the Lord.  I have been very privileged to help care for Janice these last 3 to 4 months.  She has become a part of my heart and will be there forever. I am forever humbled by having had the honor to help escort her on her journey to be with the Lord.
