Joanne Jones Lann, a beloved friend, mentor, and vibrant presence, passed peacefully on December 28,
2024, after a life well-lived.
Joanne was born Billie Joanne on September 25, 1927, in Farmington, Iowa, to William and Lucretia
Carr. She grew up with a love of adventure and an innate ability to connect with people in a way that left a
lasting impression. She graduated from Fort Madison High School before marrying Robert (Bob) Jones in
1947, following his service during World War II. The couple moved to San Bernardino, California where
they welcomed their son, Robert “Bobby” Jones, in 1953.
Joanne was a pioneer for women in the workplace since the mid 1940s, often receiving special
recognition and awards for her accomplishments, throughout her various careers. She was known in the
workplace for her attention to detail and commitment to excellence. She was also well liked by her
coworkers and developed many lasting friendships.
After Bob’s passing, Joanne met Carl Lann at a speed dating event held at church— proof that her sense
of adventure never waned. They married and shared many wonderful years together, traveling and
enjoying an active lifestyle. Joanne frequently expressed her love for Carl and gratitude for their time
together.
From front-row seats at an Elvis concert to evening spent listening to the Rat Pack in Palm Springs,
Joanne embraced every experience with enthusiasm. She explored Europe, Asia, and beyond, collecting
stories and friendships along the way. Even in her later years, Joanne remained energetic and full of
curiosity. She learned to play the organ at the age of 80, took trips to Disney World and Alaska with
friends and celebrated turning 96 with a cruise to Hawaii. Just months before her passing she was still
adventuring, enjoying a California coastal cruise with family.
Joanne was larger than life— joyful, and endlessly engaging. Those lucky enough to know her, often
found themselves deeply influenced by her wisdom, humor, and kindness. A good listener and a source of
sound advice, she was a mentor and a dear friend to many.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, William and Lucretia Carr, her husbands, Bob Jones and
Carl Lann; her son, Bobby Jones, her brother Richard Carr, and her sisters, Beverly Patton and Norma
Belt.
She is survived by her stepdaughter, June Webb (Roger), and also four grandsons and one great
grandson; her step-son Ray, her daughter-in-law Karen Matichich (Jones), and many nieces and
nephews.
Joanne often described the end of her life as “making the final trip” of her journey. To know Joanne was to
be a part of a grand adventure—one she filled with laughter, deep conversations, and an appreciation for
life.
