Lawrence (Larry) Henry Coleman, born March 26, 1935 to Mildred and Lawrence Coleman, in Brooklyn, NY, recently passed away at his home in Murrieta, CA. Larry was raised in Troy, New York and attended St. Peter's Grade School and Catholic Central High School (CCHS Class of 1953). He maintained friendships with many of his childhood friends throughout his life. Always athletic, Larry was once dubbed "Lanky Larry" for his expertise on the basketball and football teams as well as his tall, thin frame. He served as co-captain of both teams for several years at CCHS. He was inducted into the CCHS Athletic Hall of Fame June 11, 2004.
After High School Larry served in the United States Army. Larry was stationed in Germany during the Korean War where he played basketball for the U.S. Army basketball team. Post discharge from military service, he attended Ithaca College where he studied his lifelong profession of Physical Therapy. After several years in private practice, he was awarded a US Public Health grant and graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Master's in Public Health. Over the course of several decades Larry worked in various physical therapy positions, but mainly was in private/partnership practice in Los Angeles, Oxnard, and Murrieta, CA.
Once retired, Larry combined his longtime interests of photography, camping, sailing and marathon running. He belonged to several Art Galleries where his photography was exhibited and earned several prizes. He was a regular volunteer at The Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Preserve in Murrieta, CA. An avid reader, Larry was a familiar face at the Murrieta Public Library and the local Barnes and Nobel Bookstores.
Larry is survived by his three children, Michael Coleman of Placentia, CA; Jeffrey Coleman (Kristina Bauer Coleman) of Redondo Beach, CA, and Colleen Elizabeth Coleman Meissner (Danny Meissner) of Goodyear, AZ; three stepchildren, Shirley Zeiler, Gerri Markham, Timothy Moshenko, and their families; two grandsons, Max Coleman and James Quinn Coleman; his brother, Paul Ley, of Newberry, FL, two sisters, Mildred Ley Bragg, of Archer, FL and Elizabeth Coleman Santucci, Bethesda, MD; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins, in addition to life and longtime friends both in Troy, NY and Murrieta, CA.
Memorial services will be held at Calvary Chapel Murrieta in the near future. Arrangements are underway for internment in the Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
