With profound sadness we announce the passing of Nancy, our beloved Mom and “Amma” on Friday, October 22nd, 2021 at Riverside Community Hospital. She was 63 years old. Born on May 18th, 1958 in Long Beach, California to parents Raymond and Jackie Madrid; she was predeceased by her grandparents “Nana and PeePa’s” Alfred and Anita Corassa; and by her wonderful husband of 36 years, “Papa Rick Howey.”
She grew up in Long Beach, living with her grandparents and her brothers Steve and Darryl and sister Cheryl. It was her grandparents that shared their love of cooking with Steve and Nancy; and also went fishing often with them on the pier. Growing up, Nancy and Steve also enjoyed spending time with their grandparents bowling together. Nancy was very close with her Nana; together they loved visiting Redondo and Seal beach and shared a love for “people watching.”
She met her husband Richard in 1979 and always joked that she “took him home one evening and he never left.” The two were happily married on the 23rd of February in 1980 and moved from Long Beach to Moreno Valley in 1984 to raise their children: Trisha, and twins Bobby and Brian. Nancy along with her husband were involved with their kids’ extracurricular activities; Nancy was usually the Team Mom and whether cheering for her kids on the sidelines or supporting their teams by cooking and fundraising, Nancy showed her love for her kids by giving them her time and her talents in supporting their many sports and clubs. Affectionately known as the “cafeteria lady” while working at Valley View High School; she wasn’t just a Mom to her own, but to many others. Her home was always “that” home; filled with people, friends and family. Always an open door and with enough food to feed an entire football team; she loved being able to provide for others who were in need. When learning of a young boy in foster care (known to all as Daimon) who needed a stable home, she quickly attended the necessary classes and became licensed to welcome him into her home.
In 2001 she was finally promoted to being a grandma and welcomed her first grandchild Eliana, shortly afterwards welcomed two more, General and Emily. It was her grandson General that started calling her “Amma” when he was young and could not pronounce “Grandma” and the name stuck. To her delight, 3 more grandkids came along: Caleb, Cheri and Jacob. She LOVED being their “Amma.” As she showed her love by teaching them how to bake, supporting them in their many sports and activities, spending precious time with them during late night “taco runs,” going to movies together, lunch dates and trips to Disneyland; and just spoiling them every chance she got. She also was “Amma” to many other children as well.
She loved serving others, and in her retirement years spent many years baking cupcakes and cakes for others; she volunteered with cancer survivors and loved doing Bible studies with her girlfriends at BSF and spending time with the women in her Widow’s group. She also enjoyed spending time with her brother Steve and his wife Joji at her home when they would come to stay.
