Quincy Lewis McGilbray
Sunrise: June 22, 1943 Sunset: September 24, 2020
After a protracted battle with cancer, Quincy Lewis McGilbray died on September 24,
2020 in Apple Valley, CA, at home surrounded by his family, at the age of 77. He leaves
behind his wife, Kilsun McGilbray; his daughter, Golden Scudder; and his sons, Scott
McGilbray, Myungsoo McGilbray and Timothy McGilbray; his mother, Elmira McGilbray
and sister, Myra Walker.
Quincy was born on June 22, 1943 in Houston, TX, to father Will Alfred McGilbray, who
predeceased him and mother Elmira McGilbray, who still lives. He grew up in a small,
loving family with his older sister, Myra, in Texas and later California, where he resided
until his death. Quincy returned to college later in life and excelled in the Arts and won
many notable awards and contests in the local High Desert Community where he was
well respected as an artist.
Quincy married Kilsun Yang on January 26, 1967. They met in February of 1966, where
he was stationed in South Korea for 2 years in the Army. His wife, Kilsun and his
daughter Golden, later joined him in Altadena, California after his military service was
concluded. The couple continued to reside in Altadena and raised all four of their
children there. Quincy had a passion for horses and animals and shared these interests
with his children while they were growing up in Altadena. He participated in team calf
roping events with friends during his life in Altadena.
The family attended the Altadena Church of Christ during the 1980s. Quincy enjoyed
singing and was a member of the Gospel Harmonizers men’s singing group there as
well as the choir. The groups would often visit other congregations in the Southern
California area to sing and Quincy’s voice was featured in several of their songs.
Due to Quincy contracting COPD, he was advised by his doctor to move to a place with
better air quality to maintain his health. Thus, began a new chapter in his life with his
wife and two younger sons moving to the High Desert in Apple Valley, CA.
Quincy and his family began attending High Desert Church of Christ, after a few years,
where he made many friends and was well respected as a devout Christian. He made a
new and better life for his wife and sons and helped in raising 3 of his grandchildren
whom he loved taking and picking up from school.
He was first diagnosed with colon cancer in 2017 and he had a successful surgery.
Later in early 2019 he was diagnosed with cancer on his liver, and had a successful
surgery again and was in remission. He was happy to be living and free of the cancer.
However, in early 2020, he was diagnosed again with cancer in a few spots and had to
resume chemo again. Despite his will to live, his body was very weak from all the
sickness throughout the years and his health declined.
Quincy will be remembered for his Christian life, his dedication to his family, his sense
of humor, his talent as an artist and his humbleness. He always wanted to be a better
Christian, a better husband and a better dad to his children, telling them he would
always learn from his mistakes and do better by them.
Quincy is survived by his wife and children and their spouses; Joel Scudder, Liz
McGilbray, Martha McGilbray and Delia McGilbray; as well as his mother and sister,
Elmira McGilbray and Myra Walker; his 11 grandchildren, Dominique Coates, Devon
Coates, Angelina Scudder, Trevaughn McGilbray, Tajaughn McGilbray, Georgia
Gardner, Amar McGilbray, Inu McGilbray, Donovan McGilbray, Isaiah McGilbray, Aliza
McGilbray; and 2 great grandchildren, Nya Henderson and Kalei McGilbray.
Quincy requested to be cremated. His ashes will be interred at the Veteran Cemetery in
Riverside. The family would especially like to thank his nurse Sara Merf from Inland
Hospice Care, who helped his last day be as comfortable as possible; the Trident
Society for their attentive service in taking care of the overall arrangements; and
Weaver Mortuary, for making the final arrangements.
