You are the sunshine of my life!
A loving husband, a dutiful son, a generous brother.
Roger is survived by his husband, Rene, brother, Gary, niece, Meagan in California and cousins and aunts in New York.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Eleanor Palmer.
Roger obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; Master of Library Science, State University of New York, Albany; Bachelor of Arts, Hartwick College; Associate in Arts, Corning Community College.
Before he retired, Roger was the Information Systems Contract Manager at Toyota Motor Sales, USA (National HQ of Toyota in the US). Before that, he was Manager of Infrastructure Operations at the Getty Center (The J Paul Getty Trust). He also taught as an Assistant Professor, Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of California, Los Angeles.
After retiring, Roger volunteered at the Palm Springs Historical Society (PSHS) where a past president said “he brought the society’s information systems to the 21st century.”
While at the historical society, he came across a collection of photographs of Palm Springs (Palm Canyon Drive) from 1946. Using the old photos (Then) as guides, he went up and down Palm Canyon Drive (100- 400 blocks), took pictures of the existing buildings (Now), sorted, collated and added text. This labor of love gave birth to “Palm Springs: Then and Now.” The book is available at Amazon.com and all proceeds goes to PSHS.
Roger proudly served his country in the United States Army (1968 – 1970) where he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal Sharpshooter (Rifle).
Roger went on his first cruise with Rene in 2007. He was hooked, especially with Holland America’s midnight chocolate buffet and trayful of donuts for breakfast (he had a sweet tooth). They kept on cruising until 2019 before the pandemic hit. They visited Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Japan. Rene organized a family cruise to Alaska in May 2017 where Roger met his in-laws (Rene’s brother and sisters) and their spouses.
Roger and Rene visited the Philippines for the Christmas holidays in 2017. He enjoyed it so much they went back the following year. Roger expressed his desire to go back, but the pandemic got in the way.
Roger’s family would like to express their gratitude to Martha and the entire staff at Bayshire Rancho Mirage for their kindness and compassionate care. Also, thanks to Serenity Hospice for the attentive and considerate care. A special thank you to Nora and Deacon Jesus.
I will miss holding you and me being held by you.
Thank you for your patience with me.
Thank you for loving me, God knows my mother had a tough time.
From me to you, three kisses.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.tridentsociety.com/location/rancho-mirage-cremation for the Palmer family.
