Janice Faye Nielsen (Newton), age 82, of Sacramento, California compassionately passed away on Friday, May 17, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 29th at The George Primrose Masonic Temple, 3010 Bercerra Way, Sacramento CA 95821.
Janice was born in Bushy Fork, North Carolina. She joins her father, Hassle Newton, mother, Rosa Allison Newton, and sister Wanda Newton in heaven. Janice is survived by her siblings, Joan Long, Rebecca Cozart, H.L. Newton, Charles Newton and Gloria Jones. Janice also leaves her husband, Howard Nielsen, her children Lisa Nielsen-Brownfield, David Nielsen, Scarlett Nielsen, and granddaughter Elsa Faye Brownfield.
Janice was born and raised in Person County, North Carolina. She moved to California in 1960 and became a manager for Pacific Bell Telephone company. It was here where she met the love of her life and husband of nearly 55 years, Howard. She left the working world to raise her 3 children.
Janice lived an active life. Starting in her school years she participated in 4H, Tri-Hi-Y and Glee Club. Janice joined Eastern Star in 1976 and proudly served Rising Star chapter as secretary. She served as worthy matron in 1998. She was given the honor of serving as president for the Nor-Cal Deputy Grand Matrons in 2002. In addition to her service with Eastern Star, Janice volunteered for the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Shiner’s screening clinics, and the President of the PTA for Einstein Jr. High. She also volunteered as office manager for the Scottish Rite Language Clinic.
Janice was a seasoned traveler and sports fan. During her life she visited Mexico, Canada, the Panama Canal, the Galapagos Islands, China, and the British Isles. She also visited many states, both east and west coasts, enjoying the sights of the Grand Canyon, Washington DC, New York, Hawaii, Alaska, and others. She loved to watch sports, including tennis, football, baseball, NASCAR, and college Basketball. Her favorite teams were the 49ers, Duke Blue Devils and Carolina Tar Heels. Janice was also an avid bowler and played golf.
Above all Janice loved her family and was a dedicated, loyal friend. She organized block parties, holiday get togethers. Her homemade ice cream was a hit on the 4th of July and at ice cream socials. Janice, known by Jan to her friends and Faye to her family, lived life on her terms and chose to leave it the same way. She will be deeply missed.
