Originally from Valparaiso and Rolling Prairie Indiana, John came from humble beginnings. He held many jobs from a young age as a delivery boy, short order cook, bookkeeper at a construction supply company, and even opened his own private detective agency while he was a student at the University of Cincinnati. At the encouragement of his father, he enlisted in the military at the age of 19, being deployed to South Korea after his basic training. He excelled quickly in the ranks and was the youngest at Lowry AFB in Denver to become a Chief Master Sergeant after only 14 years.
John first came to California in the mid 1970’s when he was stationed at Beale Air Force Base, where he enjoyed aerial photography and waving at the cosmic aliens from the SR-71 aircraft.
John proudly served his country as a CMSGT 9th AMS and retired in 1981 after 26 years of service in the US Air Force. He then opened the Hickman Insurance Agency on the corner of Buchanan Street and Highway 20 in Marysville, where he served the community for 17 years.
John was a founding member of the Foothill Lions Club and active at the Moose Lodge in Yuba City.
Known for his outgoing personality, he was quick to make you his friend, invite you for a round of golf, a cup of coffee or lend a helping hand the moment that he met you.
He is dearly missed.
John is survived by his wife Donna Hickman, her children and grandson (Hayden), his daughters Starla Ledbetter (Dennis) and Shereen Hickman, and his brother Dennis Hickman (Delores). Grandchildren Cody Ledbetter (Alyce) and Chyanne Ledbetter. Great grandchildren Jaxson and Peyton.
A private memorial will be held.
