Lewis Wayne Easter, age 91, of Sacramento, CA passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2025 after a brief battle with Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Lewis was born on April 1, 1934 in Jewell Kansas, Lewis was first child of the late Jack and Clara Easter.
A veteran of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, he served honorably in the US Navy for 30+ years. Lew, affectionately known as Hap (Happy Easter) to his shipmates was a dedicated Marine Mechanic on various ships including the USS Manchester, USS Cabildo, USS Epperson, USS Nicholas and USS Kansas City. Over his career he was awarded a Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Combat Action Medal and several Good Conduct Medals. Lewis was a dedicated and hardworking individual who left active duty in 1974 to settle in a suburb of Sacramento, CA. He spent his days working as a machinist for Del Monte, Campbell Soup, and Blue Diamond. Lewis also continued his service in the Naval reserve, showing unwavering commitment to his country. After years of honorable service, he decided to retire in 1982, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and dedication.
Lew enjoyed camping with his family, fishing with his grandson, traveling with around the states whether towing a trailer or on his motorcycle. Lew rode a big blue Harley Davidson and was an honored member of Sacramento Hog and the River City Harley Riders, where he was known as Papa Smurf. He always carried a Papa Smurf on the tour pack of his bike, a symbol of his playful spirit. Lew's passion for exploring new horizons led him to ride through 49 states, with Alaska standing as the only one left uncharted.
He shared the joy of motorcycle riding with his youngest daughter and her husband for many years. They embarked on countless memorable rides across the states, creating cherished moments and lasting bonds with family and friends. Even after Lew hung up his helmet at the age of 83, his daughter lovingly carries on the tradition of the Papa Smurf he once treasured, now nestled alongside a Smurfette in her tour pack. Lew's passion for riding, alongside the love and cherished memories of adventure and camaraderie he shared with his family and friends, will forever be remembered and honored.
Lew, a man who lived a full and vibrant life. He proudly served his country, cherished his time on the open road riding motorcycles, and instilled valuable life lessons in his children. He taught his kids to enjoy the outdoors, whether it be camping, fishing, riding horses, canoeing or on a motorcycle. Lew's playful side was seen especially when he showcased his impeccable dance moves to the delight of his children and their friends. He will be fondly remembered as a devoted father figure to his stepson, a mentor who emphasized hard work and perseverance, and a playful teacher who imparted the art of teaching the Two-Step by guiding his daughters' feet on his own boots.
Lewis (Lew) passed away, leaving behind a legacy cherished by his loved ones. He was preceded in death by his beloved sisters Judy Easter and Ruby Gamble. Lewis is survived by his partner of 34 years, Mary Cook, his children's mother, Sally Easter, his son and daughters and son-in-law Gary Lester, Gwen Kennedy, Kris (James) Olson, his grandchildren Nyssa Dugas, Michael A. Pyzer (Amber), Bryan Olson (Alyssa), Michael Olson (Chelsea), Jacob and Joan Lester and great-grandchildren Kailee Sischo, Aubrey Pyzer, Brecken, Baylor and Blake Olson and Madyson, Nora and Oliva Olson. He is also remembered by his extended family members Valerie (Michael) Rodenborn, Lisa Cook, Terry Cook, Steve Cook, Corine (Patrick) & Race Murphy, Amiee (Seth) Maloney, Andrew, & Delilah and a multitude of nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great-nieces, as well as many cousins and Aunt Dora. Lewis will forever hold a special place in the hearts of those who knew him, as his warmth and love continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have him in their lives.
He was a man whose quiet presence spoke volumes. He may not have lit up a room when he walked in, but his essence was undeniable. With his signature OORaaah after the Pledge of Allegiance, he brought his unique energy to every gathering. Lew was a storyteller at heart, always ready to share his experiences and engage in heartfelt conversations. He would always chime into others conversations with his opinion whether it was want wanted or not. His wisdom was valued and cherished by all who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth that will be deeply missed by his many friends and loved ones. Lew’s spirit will live on in our hearts forever.
