Bruce Leo Gorsche, 70, passed away on July 7th, 2021, after a courageous battle with a rare Leukemia cancer, CMML. Bruce was a fighter and battled many illnesses and injuries over the past 4 years. He was preceded in death by his loving Grandparents, Earl and Lenice Johns of Wisconsin. He will be forever loved and missed by his “Baby Girl” sister, Donna Gorsche, his brother in law, Klaus Hansen, and his kind and loyal baseball team members and friends. He is now happy and free of pain, amongst the Angels of Our Lord’s Heavenly Home.
Bruce was born in San Diego in 1951, grew up on Oliver Avenue, and attended all of the local schools in Pacific Beach. Bruce lived as an owner for over 33 years at the Pacific Woodland Condos, where he had formed many relationships with his neighboring friends, whom respected and appreciated him.
Bruce’s career included Managing Ocean Fresh Fish Restaurant in La Jolla and Captain’s Galley Restaurant in Chula Vista, while forming a private catering business of his own. He was also part owner of a local landscaping business here in San Diego. Bruce was a workaholic and spent most of his years working for UCSD which included the Scripps Institute of Oceanography and retired from there after 20 plus years of service. During Bruce’s employment with UCSD’S Physical Plant Services Dept., he had received many certificates of excellence and appreciation from the Chancellor and his Peers, for his work. Bruce was trained in professional horticulture, long term landscaping, irrigation systems, tree maintenance, operations of equipment, soil preparation, recycling of water by the San Diego County Water Authority, campus safety by SDGE, and awarded for his service during the San Diego Firestorm of 2003.
Bruce was a dedicated baseball player, coach, and fan. Bruce coached little league and pony league at the Mission Bay Youth Athletic Field for the years 1978-1982. Bruce managed and coached his team the PB Orphans, a men’s ASA fast pitch team for over 10 years, throughout the 1980s and into the early 90s. The team participated within 3 different leagues here in San Diego. The leagues were: City of San Diego Recreational Men’s Fast Pitch League, the Pacific Beach Fast Pitch Association, and in the Inland Empire League at Barona Indian Reservation. He was the League Director of the PB Fast Pitch Association and was the unsung hero for keeping the entire league and the PB Orphans running. The team had been sponsored by local businesses, such as Ruby’s, Stinger’s, Alaskan, Pounder’s, and the Tiki over the years.. The PB Orphans played in tournaments around San Diego and Southern California at locations such as, Norco, Long Beach, Barona, San Clemente. Escondido, and Vista.
Bruce was a good friend to many and had a jokester personality, but when it was time to be serious, it was all business. Bruce loved sports as a Patriots, Padres, Kansas City Royals, and Charger fan. He was a true and proud patriot who loved and highly respected the American Flag. Bruce was very generous and devoted to supporting many charitable organizations and foundations. He also enjoyed volunteering his time and skills to people who were in need. Bruce loved animals and the outdoors as he always carried a great admiration and respect for both.
