The LOVE of our life Gone - but NOT Forgotten - and ALWAYS Missed! Carl Albert “Sonny” Polk, Jr. …born 16 September 1936 in Melrose Hospital, Melrose, Massachusetts, was A Boston Red Sox fan until the U.S. Navy transported him to San Diego, CA where he met the girl of his dreams and became a Padres baseball Fan! Not to be outdone by his friends and acquaintances, after he finished his 4 years in the U.S. Navy, he decided to tinker in associated fields of endeavor including Computer Operation, Computer Programming, Insurance Sales, Real Estate Sales and finally as the Proprietor of his own business, “Video Allstars”, a video rental and sales business. Forced to retire due to interference by a robbery and shooting, Carl retired to the “good” life in April 1994. To occupy his time while Karen, his wife of 57 years continued to work for the DOD Navy, Carl took up photography, wood working, and college classes in investment and self-improvement. While he was retired Carl and Karen managed to sail away to Mexico and later Alaska, then fly to the United Kingdom for some care-free travel and experiences of a lifetime of education and enjoyment. In addition the church choir trips provided another avenue of travel that included trips to Canada, early home of his Mother, and a fond place of remembrance of childhood trips to Nova Scotia and surrounding areas. At an early age “his boat” was the Bluenose and he was sure to let everyone know. After courtship and marriage, Carl participated in lots of fun times outside of his Navy duties and later civilian work, including water skiing, hiking and camping, fishing and picnicking, photography, and general “Family”. He was a Boy Scout Master for Troop 7 in Chula Vista, CA, acted as a Coach for Girls softball in Chula Vista and Boys baseball at the Max Little League Field, also in Chula Vista, CA. He also acted as an usher at his church and participated in the church Men’s Group which included trips to the mountains on several men’s retreats. Whatever the task Carl never missed a beat! He could always be counted on for just the “right fire” when barbecuing and was a willing participant in his wife’s trail-blazing adventures to the Del Mar Fair, Julian apple picking and eating, or beach-going just to be with family, Always his first priority. In later years, Carl enjoyed the simpler things in life such as watching John Wayne movies in his home, barbecuing a “good steak”, timed just right, or watching the backyard birds that came to feed and water, providing marvelous and entertaining antics. Carl is survived by wife, Karen; children Erick, Allan, and Denise; Grandchildren Brittany, Elise, and Sarah; his sister, Shirley and brother-in-law Rev. John R. Lilly of Massachusetts; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
