David James Carroll of Poway, California, slipped into eternal rest with the Lord, on Tuesday, November 2, 2022, at the age of 80. Dave was born on August 13, 1942, to Gerald and Kathryn Carroll in Dubuque, Iowa. The Carroll family later moved to Monona, Iowa. After graduation, Dave earned an Associates Degree in Construction Technology from Iowa State University. He worked as an engineer for the Illinois Central Railroad in Memphis, Tennessee.
On June 6, 1964, David married Constance Gruber of Monona. Three children were born to the union: Tina, Gary and Tamara. The family apartment was next door to the Elvis Presley estate. They knew Elvis was home when they heard his go-carts roaring around his home.
Dave and Connie moved back to Iowa where they operated “The Reminder” shopper. They developed the shopper into the “Calmar Courier” newspaper. David also worked for the City of Calmar, Iowa for a few years as a policeman. In 1986 the couple sold their newspaper and moved to the San Diego area where David worked in the commercial printing business until his retirement.
David is survived by Constance Carroll, his wife of 58 years, daughter Tina Carroll and wife Heather, son Gary Carroll and wife Mechele, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings include Kathleen, Steve, Marilyn, Marcia and Liz.
As a Boy Scout leader, David was happy to share his love of the outdoors. He hiked the Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Mt. Whitney, and happily paddled his canoe in The Boundary Waters as well as many rivers and lakes.
His family is thankful to everyone for the care, compassion and love shown to us during this difficult time.
