Donald Bassett Richards, born in vibrant Brooklyn, New York, on April 28, 1931, to Henry E Richards and Jessie E Bassett, led a life of service, craftsmanship, and quiet passions. Educated in New York, his sense of duty called him to the Armed Forces in October of 1955. Don served honorably as a Korean War Veteran, his bravery was recognized with a Purple Heart Award. Upon his honorable discharge on August 15, 1957, he and his family found a new home in New England. Where he was active in his church, and coached his children’s baseball and basketball teams.
Fate brought Don to Salem, New Hampshire, where he met his beloved wife June while working at the W.T. Grant store. Their love story blossomed, leading to their marriage on October 18, 1973. In 1985, they embarked on a new chapter, settling in sunny San Diego, California.
A skilled carpenter, Don’s handiwork, found a new home at the Westwood Club in Rancho Bernardo. The wooden structures he built remain a testament to his dedication to his craft. In his free time, the melodies of the “Big Bands” filled his workshop as he meticulously crafted models and wooden treasures for loved ones.
Don was an avid reader, the pages of a good book transporting him on daily adventures. He cherished weekly drives, to the beach and countryside offering peaceful respite. Don’s heart belonged to the Wild West: Monument Valley, his beloved “God’s Country, fueled his lifelong love for Classic Westerns. A true John Wayne fan, watching a gripping Western and eating a piece of chocolate (to satisfy his sweet tooth) was his recipe for a perfect day.
Retirement didn’t slow Don. He found joy in coaching girls’ softball and track and field, pouring his energy into shaping young athletes in San Marcos. Don was a devoted grandfather, always there to celebrate his grandchildren’s milestones and achievements, big and small.
He leaves behind his cherished wife of 50 years, June Helen Jacquart (Morse) and his beloved children: Scott R Richards, Beverly M Richards and Donald B Richards Jr., who connected him to his former wife, Ruth M Richards. He is also survived by his step-children, Lou Ann Makihele (Jacquart) and Michael R Jacquart. His legacy lives on through his ten grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Don joins his dearly departed siblings, Jane, Dick, James and Frank.
He will be laid to rest on April 12, 2024 at Miramar National Cemetery. 5795 Nobel Drive,
San Diego, CA 92122. The service begins at 9:30 am with guests requested to arrive by 9:00 am.
