Elizabeth Caceres was born in Guatemala City on April 21, 1939. She immigrated to the United States in 1956 and lived in New Orleans, Louisiana. She relocated to California in 1959, the state where she built and lived her life for the majority of the next 60+ years.
In 1962, she married Pedro Edgar Caceres, her childhood sweetheart. Together they lived in Germany where Pedro, known as Edgar, served in the armed forces, and in Florida, where they both attended and graduated from the University of Florida in Gainesville. After earning her degree in Education, Elizabeth planted roots in San Bruno, California, where she took a job in Social Work on behalf of San Mateo County. After she retired from the County in 1999, Elizabeth began a second career working at what she loved doing most: cooking for other people. She found great joy in cooking for the Franciscan Friars at her parish church, Our Lady of Angels in Burlingame. The priests, to whom she referred as “my boys,” became lifelong friends.
Elizabeth loved traveling. She took frequent trips to visit friends and family domestically and abroad. Some of her favorite destinations included Hawaii, Paris, Italy and New York. Elizabeth had a lovely flower garden and would spend hours on end tending to her beloved roses. She was a master baker and chef who reveled in entertaining friends and family alike.
In 2017, Elizabeth was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and moved to San Diego to be closer to family. She passed away from the progression of the disease on Saturday, March 25, 2023. She is preceded in death by her husband, P. Edgar Caceres; her mother, Laura de Ramirez; her sister, Ana Banister; and her brothers, Mario Ramirez and Herman Ramirez. Elizabeth is survived by her three children: Marie (Mark) Makinson, Steven (Julie) Caceres, and Deanna (Bill Kehoe) Caceres. Her sister, Olga Nettelman She was the proud grandmother to eight grandchildren and three great-children, and the treasured aunt of many nieces and nephews.
