Ernest (Ernie) Gene Stewart, 67, of San Diego, CA. passed away on October 22, 2022, after a brief illness with lung cancer. He was preceded in death by his father, James (Jim) A. Stewart, and brother-in-law Ed Basan.
He is survived by his wife Karen (Engelmyer) Stewart, mother, Norma Jean (Jeannie) Silva, sister Lisa and her husband Doug Cain, sister-in-law Ilene Basan and three nephews, Rhys Mavis, Reid Cain, and Benjamin Goldstein, and as well as aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Ernie was an avid athlete at Grossmont High School where he played in many different sports and continued his love of sports throughout his life. During his earlier years he enjoyed surfing and as a young adult was in a softball traveling team. There was no sport he could not master once he put his mind to it. He loved the San Diego professional sports teams; however, his favorites were the Padres and Chargers where he and his wife were season ticket holders and attended numerous games.
Ernie started his working career in various construction trades, spent 16 years in the vending machine industry and finally found his favorite career working as security for sporting and entertainment events at various locations in San Diego.
Ernie’s enormous personality, and friendly smile will be missed by his wife of 22 years, his family, friends and all his security colleagues. Should you so desire to do something in Ernie’s memory please give to the charity of your choice.
