Bunny was born November 26, 1921, in Hull, IA, to Frederick and Anna Maria Bunge. She grew up in Illinois and loved sports, especially tennis, and was a gifted pianist. She graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Illinois State University at Normal, IL. She then moved to California and married Robert von Bergen whom she had met in college. She was a teacher, then switched careers in her 60s and became a successful real estate agent.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert von Bergen, and siblings Frederick Bunge and Marguerite Lohrmann.
She is survived by her much-loved family including her children Scot von Bergen, Valerie von Bergen, Eric Von Bergen, and Guy von Bergen (Lorevic), her siblings Marty Bunge and Leonard Bunge (Barb), her grandchildren Nicole von Bergen, Marina von Bergen, Tessie Carroll, Amy Robinson (Clay), Anneliese Amacher, Veda von Bergen, Vera Dubovoy (Ilya), CJ von Bergen, and Robert von Bergen. She also is survived by great-grandchildren Ethan, Thora, Melissa, Sydney (Nathan), Wesley, Azaya, Lisetta, and Andreas, and one great-great-grandson Luke, along with nieces, nephews, cousins and a veritable host of relatives and dear friends, all of whom knew how intimately in her heart she held them.
Bunny was active, energetic, alert, and involved up to the end of her life on earth, playing bridge, visiting museums and points of interest, attending concerts and recitals, starting a book club in her retirement home and taking part in another, faithfully attending several Bible studies, and crocheting scarves for the homeless. Before retirement, while she still was driving (until age 95), she delivered Meals on Wheels. She was active in her churches, Lutheran Church of the Cross, Laguna Hills, and Mission Lutheran Church, Laguna Niguel. She loved to travel and visited Europe, South America, and China, as well as many places across the US. She especially enjoyed road trips and family reunions. Her most recent trip was to Texas in November and December of 2019, to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and her 98th birthday with family and friends. She also met her great-great-grandson Luke.
Bunny’s family and friends were always on her mind and in her heart. She actively reached out to them by sending cards, texts, emails, ecards, and calling on her cell phone, consistently and often. She never met a stranger. She visited shut-ins. She retained an encyclopedic memory and was mentor to many and an advocate for all.
Bunny was beloved by her family and friends, showering them with great wisdom, compassion and love. She attributed her knowledge and wisdom to voracious reading and to “prayer without ceasing.” She regularly shared her testimony of God’s goodness and blessings in this life and is remembered and appreciated for her strong character and faith. She gave of her time and treasure and many talents with genuine and unceasing generosity. Her life was a shining example of a life well lived.
Bunny’s faith in God informed her life - she wanted the light of Jesus to shine through her to others. Well done, good and faithful servant!
