George Thomas “Tom” McGrath was born May 6, 1933 to George and Miriam (Wells) McGrath in Casper WY. He was grew up in the San Francisco Bay area and lived there most of his life. He loved the beauty and small town atmosphere of Hollister, CA and lived there for over 26 years. He died at age 88, on August 4, 2021 in San Diego County, CA.
As a teen, he joined the Army National Guard. He worked for Pacific Bell before serving seven years in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne in North Carolina and Germany. He had a long career in transportation as a dedicated semi-truck owner/driver, until retiring at the amazing age of 80!
He was a 5th generation Californian. He was proud of his Scottish/Irish lineage and was amused when a DNA test confirmed his Indigenous American ancestry, corroborating family rumors! He worked hard and enjoyed socializing with everyone throughout his day. He was always good natured and quick to tell jokes or stories of events in his life to anyone who would lend an ear.
He was preceded in death by his dear parents and brother James. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Cynthia and her daughter Audra, of Hollister CA, whom he loved dearly; his children Carolyn (Bill), Barbara (Todd), Susan (John), Matt (Lisa), Darlene; 7 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. He loved all his children and stepchildren.
Internment and Military Honors October 14, 2021, at 2pm sharp.
