When the Sunday edition of the Seattle Times arrives, I always go to PACIFIC  which is the wondeful little full color magazine that comes each Sunday and find the article that high light Seattle's past. 

JY was born in Seattle and is the only person that I have had as a long time friend who was actually born in Seattle.

After he and Maureen moved to Oceanside California we swapped visits and another way we kept in touch was by me sending him clippings about the history of Seattle. Now when the paper come, I look at the articles and cannot share.  BUT we have so many wonderful memories that still linger on.

My name is James ( Jim) Grayson. I live in Federal Way WA where Jim and Maureen lived prior to them leaving for Oceanside CA a number of years ago.  I am 85 years old and have travelled a lot and met many people. But few as endearing as JY and Maureen.
This is taking me a long long time to write because Jim is one of the most honest, caring,  intelligent, and loyal friends that anyone could ever hope to meet. Our friendship is so close and intertwined that I am finding it difficult to know just where to begin and cannot put all of the pieces in place.
Jimmy was born on the water in Seattle area and he held several  positions or slots within the Puget Sound area. Almost each Sunday when I read the Sunday Seattle Times there would be an article about the history of the Puget Sound area and I would read them and then send them to Jimmy and then he and I would discuss them. In our relationship, We would call each other Jimmy and somewhere in our written communication between Jimmy, Maureen, and myself his moniker was often JY. His mechanical aptitude was off the charts. Even when he was in High School, he made money repairing automobile transmissions. At one point he was with the City of Snohomish police department and we  often talked about his experiences there.  He was also in manufacturing with a large company in Renton, WA.  Amongst the most fortunate positions was when he was involved in  insurance and met a beautiful woman from SCOTLAND !After the appointment the young lady's mother  commented " there is definitely a spark between the two of you ". Turns out the mother was correct.  JY and Maureen ended up marrying and then shortly thereafter moved to Federal Way WA and became two of the best neighbors and then two of the best friends my wife Madelyn and I have ever had. This is getting too emotional for me now so I will have to hit the send button and resume later

When I was little Dad taught me how to ride a bike. This isn’t me but it captures the idea. My banana seat bike also had this cool bar in the back. That bar is how Dad kept me vertical and moving. We had a hill on our street and as I got better at riding Dad would steer me down the hill. I kept yelling back at him. “Don’t let go ok?” Dad would jog along side. “Yep, still here holding on.” He’d yell back breathlessly. 
Time after time, down the hill. Me riding and Dad jogging along. Then one time when I said “Don’t let go ok?” I got nothing but silence. Poor Dad was warn out and holding his knees, out of breath.  I was almost to the bottom of the hill before I realized I was riding all by myself. He sees me wobble and panic and yells down the hill at me “You got it. You got it. You’re doing great”

So very proud of you , my love , on this Veteran’s Day and every day

He was one of a kind. Loved it when he was a Snohomish police when I was in high school. He was a hoot to us hooligans!! Very fond memories of him.
