With hearts full of love and profound sadness, we share the passing of Jan Christian Paulin on August 5, 2024. Jan left this world peacefully at home in Coronado, CA, surrounded by his devoted family, after a courageous year-long battle with Glioblastoma. He was 73 years old.
Born in Aarhus, Denmark, on February 9, 1951, Jan’s life was nothing short of extraordinary. He was the cherished husband, best friend, and soulmate of Vicki A. Paulin, who stood by his side through every adventure and challenge. He leaves behind a family who adored him: his beloved sons, Hanson Wood (Leah Lander-Wood) and Peter Christian Paulin (Alan Meraz), whose accomplishments filled him with immense pride; his stepchildren, Mitchell McCuistion and Maranda McCuistion; and his treasured grandchildren, Sebastian Lander-Wood, Micah Lander-Wood, and Lillyana Cruz, who brought boundless joy to his life. He is also survived by his sister, Ann-Britt Paulin Oettinger (Michael Oettinger) of Denmark. Jan now joins his parents, Peter Paulin and Else Lillian Paulin, in eternal peace.
Jan’s journey began in Aarhus, where he graduated from Marselisborgh High School in 1969. After high school Jan served in the Danish Army. He then earned his law degree from Aarhus University, launching a distinguished legal career as a prosecutor and later a partner at the law firm Advokatfirmaet Kleberg. He also served as an external educator for his alma mater Aarhus University. His sharp mind and unwavering determination set the stage for a life that would take him far beyond Denmark.
In 1989, Jan moved his family to the United States, beginning a new chapter as General Counsel at Unibank in New York City. Three years later, San Diego became home, and with it came his foray into the renewable energy industry. Jan was a visionary—first as General Counsel and then CEO of SeaWest WindPower, and later in 2001 as the co-founder and CEO of Padoma Wind Power, until its successful sale to NRG Energy in 2006. His pioneering work left an indelible mark on the wind energy sector as a highly respected and inspiring leader.
However, Jan’s legacy isn’t just about his accomplishments—it’s about the stories he told, the laughter he shared, and the adventures that defined his life. With a storyteller’s gift and a twinkle in his eye, he transported listeners to far-off places where he and Vicki traveled sharing unforgettable moments of his life, weaving humor and insight into every tale.
Jan’s adventurous spirit and his zest for life was unmatched. In 2012, Jan married the love of his life, Vicki, aboard their yacht while embarking on an extraordinary and incredible journey together. For eight years, they explored the Pacific Coast on their yacht as they cruised as far north as Glacier Bay, Alaska, spent summers cruising the waters of beautiful British Columbia and winters in the sun-drenched shores of Southern Mexico. Their travels didn’t stop there—they embraced the world with open arms, savoring its cultures, cuisines, and experiences. Their love for each other and for Mexico grew during their travels. In 2020, their hearts found a second home in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, creating a perfect balance between their lives in California and their “eternal summer” by the sea in Mexico.
Jan was a man of many passions. An accomplished pilot, he loved the thrill of adventure and the freedom of the skies. His brilliant mind, quick wit, and strong opinions were tempered by a deep generosity and an infectious humor that endeared him to everyone he met. A lover of fine dining and wine, he made every meal an occasion to celebrate life.
Above all, Jan lived by his personal creed: “Get the last oink out of the pig.” He lived life to the fullest, leaving no dream unfulfilled and no moment unappreciated. His “Bucket List” was full.
Jan’s presence lit up every room, and his absence leaves an ache in the hearts of all who knew him. His love, wisdom, and boundless spirit will forever inspire those he touched.
A private celebration of Jan’s incredible life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to the Musella Foundation for Brain Research, ensuring his fight against Glioblastoma will continue to help others.
Rest in peace, Jan. Your story was magnificent, and your legacy and light will never fade.
