Jolene was born January 12, 1948, to Vivian B & Emil Shalander in Los Angeles, CA. She graduated from University High School in 1964 and then went on to study at Santa Monica College and MTI Business School.
She married Larrey Hammons in 1971. They had 3 children Dwayne, Teresa & John before divorcing in 1980.
Jolene remarried in 1983 to George Dayton, where she was introduced and fell in love with off-roading (three wheelers and dune buggies). Jolene and George and her two children spent significant time going off-road at the Anza-Borrego State Park.
In Jolene’s 20s and early 30s, she managed several apartment buildings and worked as a New Accounts Coordinator for Account-A-Call, while raising her two children. In 1980 she moved to Ramona, CA to be closer to her parents. She was hired in 1980 by the Ramona Unified School District as administrative assistant working at Ramona High School’s counseling center. During her tenure she established and ran the career center for several years. She retired after 24 years of distinguished service during the summer 2004.
Upon retiring in 2004, Jolene used her ability to achieve things that she set her mind to by joining Ramona’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Ramona Emergency Assistance League (REAL) and RACES (Radio Amateur Community Emergency Services), by providing her HAM radio operator experience and certification she acquired earlier in life. Jolene was instrumental in supporting the CERT, REAL and RACES teams by submitting requests and obtaining private and government grants. She also helped to man stations directing evacuees during the Witch Creek Wildfire in 2007.
Jolene loved to travel with her mother Vivian and children where she went on road trips from California to Nebraska, Missouri, Washington, DC and Maine, as well as cruises to Puerto Vallarta Mexico, the Caribbean and Alaska. Before traveling alone became too difficult she would spend annual vacations in Florida and Virginia visiting her daughter (Teresa) and her family (4 grandchildren and husband).
Jolene was preceded in death by her son Dwayne Hammons, parents Emil & Vivian B Shalander, brother Gary Shalander, Sr and former husband George Dayton.
Jolene is survived by her two children: Teresa (Michael) Hammar of Spotsylvania, VA and John (Monica) Hammons of Ramona, CA. Nine grandchildren: Alexandrea (Hunter) Davis, Kimberly Hammar, Nathanial Hammar, Tyler Hammar, Rose Wolfe, Gabrielle Burr, Kalib Burr, Jacob Burr, and Ezekiel Hammons. Two great-grandchildren: Aurora Davis and Vladimir Keibler. Also, her 2 beloved cats, Stars and Stripes.
