Kenneth L. Short
Ken was born in Detroit, Michigan, in December, 1936. At age 18, while attending high school, he joined the U.S. Navy, where he his education. While in the Navy he served abroad a variety of craft, but spent most of it in the Submarine Service, from die*l boats to nuclear fist as well as the Fleet Ballistic Missile boats. He completed his Navy career on an ocean going fleet tug, at age 38.
After he retired, he worked for the city schools of San Diego for about 2 years, then went to work for the Southland Corp., where he opened two maintenance shops, one in Reno, Nevada & the other in Bakersfield, California. As he tried to work his way back to San Diego, he went to work for civil service, first at Camp Pendleton and then the Marine Corp Recruit Depot, where he worked for twenty years. While at his last position he received several awards for his work ethics and improvement of work standards.
He joined Normal Heights Lodge #632 and served as Master in 1993. He has been a member of Al Bahr Shrine since 1990, and has been president of the Sons of the Desert Shrine club on two different occasions. He is also a member of the Directors Staff, Mount Laguna Shrine club, The Yacht Club, & North County Shrine club. He has served as beverage coordinator and W.S.A chairmen for Al Bahr, also has been a shot gun for the Samaritan Drivers. He has served on the Divan in various positions.
In June of 1981, he & his wife, Margaret, (his High School sweetheart,) opened a travel agency in Encinitas, which they operated for over 12 years, they both put tours & trips together. They both became Certified Travel Consultants. (This is like a B.A. degree in business.) They have been married for 46 years, and have 4 children and 4 grandsons. They have also been able to assist Al Bahr Shrine in providing airline tickets for the children to be transported to various Shrine hospitals.
He has been 1st Vice president of his condo association.
He has attended Mesa College to update and improve his skills in business.
He has been the wagon master the last few years for the Sons of the Desert & their trips.
