Loi was born on September 30, 1940 in Vietnam to his father Tai Duc Nguyen and mother Teo Thi Tran. He married his wife Huong Thi Truong who admired his charm and dancing skills. After Loi spent years in a communist concentration camp, the family escaped to a Malaysian refugee camp, and immigrated to San Diego where they raised two daughters, Lan and Linh, and one son, Vinh.
Loi enjoyed cheering for San Diego sports teams. When he retired, he took pride in caring for his grandkids…whether picking them up from school, changing their diapers, cooking them soup, or sneaking them candy. When not caring for them, he often spent time gardening and could occasionally be heard playing the ukulele.
Loi loved and cared for his wife Huong when she died from liver cancer in October 2019. He is survived by his three children, Lan, Linh, and Vinh, as well as his nine grandchildren, Nicky, Taylor, Kaylinh, Dylan, Asher, Vinson, Sasha, Khaian, and Rachel.
The memorial service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church (4335 Van Dyke Ave.) on Saturday, 4/30/2022, at 2pm.
