Mac passed away surrounded by his family on May 30, 2024. Mac was born in Atwood, Kansas, to Adolph “Knute” McDougal and Leila “Tiny” (Bosler) McDougal.
The firstborn of five siblings, Mac had many responsibilities from an early age. One of his jobs was driving a truck delivering ice to businesses and families. After graduating from high school in 1949, Mac attended the University of Kansas, joining the Naval ROTC program and, after graduating, was commissioned as an Ensign. He served as a supply officer and enjoyed many ports of call on his Western Pacific assignments.
During a stop in San Diego, Mac met Dona Larson, whom he married in 1955. Mac completed his law degree at University of Colorado and moved to San Diego in 1959, just in time for the birth of a daughter, Kyle, followed a year later by a son, Tim. By that time, Mac was working as an attorney in San Diego’s East County.
In 1962, Mac joined the firm of Linley and Duffy in El Cajon and immediately became the Assistant City Attorney for El Cajon, a city of 33,000 residents at that time. In 1968, Mac became City Attorney, representing El Cajon for 38 years until his retirement in 2000. Over the years, the role of City Attorney for smaller cities became more complex, so Mac founded the San Diego County City Attorney’s Association in 1973. In addition, he was active in the City Attorney’s Department of the League of California Cities. And from 1990 – 2004, Mac also served as City Attorney for Imperial Beach in South San Diego County.
Mac’s community involvement included the Rotary Club of El Cajon, including service on the Board of Directors and as President; the El Cajon Chamber of Commerce, including service on the Board of Directors and as President; service on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Clubs of East County, also as President. In 1972, Mac was named El Cajon Citizen of the Year.
Mac was a Chargers season ticket holder from 1961 until they left town. He was an avid fan of KU Basketball, always ready to bellow out “Rock Chalk Jayhawk.”
In 1990, Mac married Anne Spencer and immediately gained two more young adult children, Kim and Scott. After retiring in 2000, Mac and Anne enjoyed many motor home adventures, Chargers tailgates and family gatherings.
Mac is survived by wife, Anne McDougal; children Kyle Becchetti (Noel), Tim McDougal (Stanna), Kim de Sousa (Jose), Scott Ryon (Argusta); grandchildren Elise Tincher (Dann), Evan Becchetti, Amanda McDougal Green (Eric), Kevan McDougal, Brittney Galvan (David), Andrew Ryon, Echo Ryon; great grandchildren Noah, Desmond, Luna, Lucas, and Josie; sisters Lila McDougal, Marilee Green (Mark), Kathlyn Brooksher and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.
