Phil Winston was born on February 28, 1935, in Austin, TX. He was the son of Philip Eldridge Winston Sr. and Eva Meredith Winston. Phil grew up in Austin where he received his primary and secondary education and then attended the University of Texas in Austin where he was President of Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and a member of the R.O.T.C. In 1958 he completed his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Chemistry from U.T. Throughout Phil's life he remained a loyal Longhorn fan and would catch a game whenever he could. After graduation he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort George G Meade, Maryland. He served a total of 2 years active duty including service in Germany. He left the service as a 1st Lieutenant.
After the Army, Phil moved to Pittsburgh, PA and worked at PPG in the Paint Division where he was awarded several U.S. patents. While in Pittsburgh, he met his future wife, Sylvia Jean Thomas. They were married on November 28, 1968. Phil and Sylvia moved to Cherry Hill, New Jersey shortly thereafter and then relocated to Houston, TX in 1972. In 1977, they, along with their two children, moved to their present home in San Diego when Phil accepted a job offer as a Research Chemist working for the biotech company CP Kelco, a division of Merck. Several more U.S. patents were awarded and he retired from Kelco after 25 dedicated years. Phil and Sylvia raised their two children at their Bay Park home in San Diego.
Together, Phil and Sylvia had a true passion for traveling. At almost any given time, they had 2-3 vacations planned. Both Sylvia and Phil were very active in Square Dancing, the Audubon Society, Pug Rescue of San Diego County, Dixieland Jazz Festivals, and Southern Gospel Conventions. They also volunteered as ushers for the San Diego Symphony and Summer Pops Concerts.
As a member of the Pacific Beach Presbyterian Church, Phil was very active serving as a Deacon, Elder Member of the Finance Committee, Elder Chair of the Personnel Committee, Nominating Committee, and Stewardship Committee. He participated in Bible Studies, Men’s Ministry Retreats, in addition to serving as an Usher and Liturgist at Church Services. Phil was a Faithful Worshiper on Sundays and an Encourager of the Sunday evening Root’s Ministry.
After battling a short illness, Phil passed away at Kaiser hospital in San Diego on the morning of Saturday March 24, 2018 with family by his side. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Elaine Cesaro, son-in-law, Michael Cesaro, and grandson, Nathaniel Winston Cesaro. He is also survived by his sister Patricia Elaine Winston of Austin, TX. Preceding Phil in death were his wife, Sylvia and his son, Scott Thomas Winston.
Phil was a great family man and a loving father and grandfather. His positive attitude and friendly demeanor will be truly missed by those who knew him.
