Richard Lynn Haynes, 79, a battle-tested Marine, explosive ordnance disposal expert, and loyal family man, passed away on March 22, 2025, a little more than a year after his wife, Jeanette Haynes. Born in Sugar Land, Texas, to Wirt E. Haynes and Juanita L. (Richardson) Haynes, Richard lived a life defined by service, resilience, and quiet strength.
A proud U.S. Marine, Richard served with distinction in Vietnam as part of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit, where his steady hands and unshakable courage neutralized countless threats—saving lives both on and off the battlefield. Though he rarely spoke of his service, those who served beside him knew that Richard Haynes was the man you wanted in your corner when danger loomed.
After retiring from the Marines, he settled in California, where he drove for North County Transit, bringing the same dedication to his community that he once brought to his country. A lifelong lover of discipline and working dogs, he spent many years as an active member of the San Diego Schutzhund Club, where he trained alongside his canine companions with characteristic focus and passion. In quieter moments, he found peace casting a line into the water—a pastime that balanced the intensity of his earlier years.
As he greatly desired, Richard spent his final months in the comfort of the family home, surrounded by his family's love.
Richard is survived by his sister, Cecilia Vosch; his daughters, Anita Brooks, and Joyce Shaw; his granddaughter, Brittany Brooks; his granddog, Bella; and a legacy of unwavering reliability. As his family often said, "He wasn't just tough—he was the kind of tough that made everyone else feel safe."
