Roy was born October 2, 1929 in New Holland, South Dakota. As a young boy growing up on a farm, Roy enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing basketball and baseball. He liked to fix things, explore new places, and go camping. Following a stint in the Army, Roy earned his Bachelor’s degree at St. Cloud State University and his Ph.D. in Education at the University of Minnesota. A lifelong educator with a proverbial “can do” attitude, he made friends easily and was always inquisitive about how things worked. His favorite sayings were, “There is probably more than one way to solve this problem”, and unsurprisingly, “Always try to do your best”.
Roy lived significant parts of his 94+ years in South Dakota, Minnesota, Oregon, and California. Attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities whenever possible to support them was just one way he supported those he loved. In his last decade, he was a fixture at his granddaughter’s robotics competitions and grandson’s baseball games.
Roy is survived by his wife of 63 years, Barbara Muckey (née Kath); three children, Ross (Michelle) Muckey, Brett (Candice) Muckey, and Ann (Doug) Arm; and three grandchildren, Nikki Arm, Josh Arm, and Davarie Muckey.
