Lani was born in Santa Maria, California, He spent most of his childhood living on the east coast, before coming back to California as a teen. After graduating from Salinas High School, he joined the Coast Guard.
While working at Kaiser Refractory in Moss Landing, Lani met his future wife, Sandi. They were married in 1977 at the University of Redlands where Sandi was attending college.
Lani’s love of collecting started at the age of 8 when his grandmother gave him a stamp collection. After various jobs, he partnered with his friend, John La Riviere in a collectibles shop, specializing in stamps, coins, militaria, and other collectibles.
Lani is survived by his wife of 44 years Sandi; his children: Christina, Ian and Mieko; his grandchildren: Leilani Sauceda, Mariah Sauceda, Kylie Imperio, and Ian Imperio; his great granddaughter Eva Luna Ayala; and his brother, Michael Imperio of Oregon.
Lani was predeceased by his parents Walter and Georgia Imperio; his brother Charlie Morningstar; and his sister Sandy Imperio.
Per Lani’s wishes, there will be no memorial services and his ashes will be scattered at sea.
