Alex was born on June 14, 1931 to the late Charles J. Donaville II and Ida M. St. Aurin Donaville. He was born in Pass Christian, Mississippi where he attended St. Philomena School as well as Randolph High School.
At the age of sixteen the family relocated to Chicago, IL where he completed his education. He attended Aviation vocational school until he was drafted into the Korean War in 1951. Alex was a Veteran and served in the United States Army from November 30, 1951 to November 18, 1953. Alex was employed by the Chicago Transit Authority System (CTA) from 1953-1958.
In 1958, Alex relocated to Oakland California where he met Dorothy, the love of his life. He was a devoted and loving Father to Reginald (Reggie), Marsha, Honey, Alex Jr.
(deceased), and Kevin.
Alex transferred from the Chicago Transit Authority to the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (formally known as the Key System). Alex retired from AC Transit in 1985. Alex and Dorothy were Entrepreneurs and had various successful businesses. Alex was an accomplished Carpenter, who enjoyed wood work, remodeling, and specialized in kitchens and baths.
Alex was a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver; he served as the Grand Knight of the Immaculate Heart of Mary – Council No 137. He was a Meritorious Fourth Degree
member of the Knights. He also served as President of the Northern California Inner Councils and Courts for six years.
Brother Donaville was also a chartered member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the St. Paschal’s Men’s Fourth Day Group. Brother Alex Donaville was a cherished member of "Brother-to-Brother", an African American men community service group engrained through Christian Biblical Ideals every Tuesday where the group had dinner, and Bible study. "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" Ps 133:1 Alex was also a member of the East Bay Center for the Blind.
Alex was a devout Catholic and devoted servant for both St. Benedict’s, Parish and
St. Paschal’s Parish.
Alex loved entertaining, dancing, having meaningful conversations, boating on the Delta and fishing. Alex was an active and supportive father, grandfather, great grandfather, and a dearly beloved uncle and friend to many. He had a passion for life; he was soft-spoken, a charming and kind loving person. Alex was loved and graciously respected by his extended village family.
Alex was the fourth of seven children, Charles J. Donaville III, Sydney S. Donaville Sr., Theresa R. Donaville-Burns, Beatrice Donaville-Dew, Louis J. Donaville, Sr., and Deloris M. Donaville-Jackson, all preceded him in death.
Alex departed this life unexpectedly on Saturday, November 23rd 2019. Alex leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of fifty-nine years, Dorothy; sons, Reginald
(Reggie) (Cathy) and Kevin (Silvia); Daughters, Marsha (Royce) and Honey
(Jerome); Grandchildren, Steven (Stevie), Kenny, Randy, Kristopher, Kavina, Mallory, Melissa, Kevin, Matthew, Victoria (Tori) and Carissa; Eight Great-Grandchildren, many nieces/nephews and extended family and friends.
Alex will be greatly missed by his many family members and loved ones. We Love You and We Miss You
