Ed was born on October 25, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, and spent a lifetime devoted to education and athletics. After earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Prairie View A&M University in 1968, he relocated to the Bay Area, California, with best friend and fellow educator, Stelton Mitchell. He became an instructor at Helms Middle School in San Pablo, California and there met fellow teacher, Jessie Smith. They married in February 1970 at St. Columba Catholic Church in Oakland, California.
Together, Ed and Jessie established homes in Richmond, Hercules, Vallejo, and finally, Fairfield, CA. Their daughter, Cherilyn D. Gibson, born in 1976, pursued a degree from the University of California at Berkeley, while their son, Gregory R. Gibson, born in 1980, served in the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Army.
From 1968 to 2003, Ed served as a passionate middle school Physical Education teacher and coach. His impact on the lives of his students extended beyond the classroom, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Known for his unwavering commitment to his students, Ed fostered a love for physical fitness and sportsmanship. His coaching prowess went beyond the playing field, as he instilled values of teamwork, perseverance, and determination in generations of Bay Area youth.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ed was a loving father and grandfather, cherished friend, and pillar of support for his family. His 20 years in retirement were spent golfing, gaming, and bowling as well as enjoying professional sports, audiobooks, old westerns and time with friends and family. He will be remembered for his bright smile, laid-back approach to life, and unwavering zest for sports of all levels.
Edwin was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Jessie, father, Robert and mother, Zetta.
His memory will be cherished by daughter, Cherilyn Gibson Lewis, son-in-law, Ivan Lewis, son, Gregory Gibson, sisters, Antoinette Gibson, Cecelia Johnson, and Elissa Clay, grandchildren, Gregory Edwin and Ethan Michael, and a host of family: Gibsons, Lewises, and friends.
