01/21/1948 - 01/23/2018
It is with great sadness that the family of Joseph (Joe) Charles Macksey announces his passing on January 23, 2018, after a brief hospitalization at John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, California at the age of 70 years.
Joe is survived by his mother Julie Anne (nee Rozier) Macksey; his wife Surasavati (Bue nee Kuvanonda); his two daughters Alisa and Julie; his siblings Susan and John, Jr. (Christie); his sister-in-law Parntip Kokotaylo; and his two nephews Kristopher (Ashley) Kokotaylo and Scott (Amy) Hutton. He is preceded in death by his father John Macksey; his siblings Alice (nee Macksey) Donahoe and George; his Uncle and Aunts Pete (Sally) Rozier, Mary Louise (Don) Hughes, and Sheila (nee Macksey) Sebastian.
Joe was born on January 21, 1948, in Saint Louis, Missouri, to John and Julie Anne (nee Rozier) Macksey. Joe graduated from Westminster College (Fulton, MO) in 1970 with a bachelor’s degree in French and Russian. Joe was a member of Beta Theta Pi and celebrated 50 years as a fraternity brother in 2017. He served in the U.S. Army from 1970-1972. He earned a master’s degree in International Management from Thunderbird School of International Management (Glendale, AZ). Upon graduation, Joe started working for Bank of America as an auditor for the Asia division. He married Surasavati (Bue) Kuvanonda in 1977. After getting married, they moved to Manila, Philippines, where he worked with Bank of America as a corporate finance officer. During their time in the Philippines, they welcomed daughter Alisa. Joe and Bue moved to Concord, California, in 1982 and welcomed daughter Julie in 1987. Joe worked for Bank of America for 27 years. In his last position he served as vice president for the office of foreign assets control.
Joe was funny, had a quirky sense of humor, quick wit, which often had us in stitches with his antics. He was an avid reader whose favorite authors were Stephen King, James Michener, and Louis L’Amour. Most recently enjoyed the “Game of Thrones” series (books and TV show). He also loved John Wayne and war movies from the Civil War to Vietnam. All of this shows you his eclectic interests. Joe was an excellent and patient teacher who shared all of his knowledge with those he taught. He liked people, was a loyal friend, and loved his family.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on February 17, 2018, at the Roundtree Clubhouse (5461 Roundtree Drive, Concord, CA 94521). All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joe’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota’s First Generation Initiative at 700 Terrace Heights, Winona, MN 55987. The family would like to thank the ICU unit staff, especially the doctors and nurses, of John Muir Medical Center for their efforts and care.
