My Wonderful, Loving, Caring, Loyal, Kind, Humble, Forgiving and Handsome husband Bob Mason entered his new journey January 6th 2021 at 10:00PM. I was with him. He passed in true Mason style with peaceful dignity. Trish, my "LOC" neighbors, hospice nurse and Fr. William came within minutes of my call and his passing. Fr. William said prayers and blessings over Bob and we all gathered around his bed and said our goodbyes. It was spiritual and comforting for all. After 6 years of dealing with cancers, Bob was tired and ready to go home to the Lord. We believe he is is Heaven golfing with his golfing buddies who have gone before him.
Bob was born 11/12/1934 in East Orange, NJ to parents Leo & Helen Mason. Joining older brother Bill, later followed by sisters Pati and Virginia. He graduated from Central High School in Newark, NJ in 1953. He entered the United States Navy in March 1954 for 4 years as a Navel Aviation Electronics Technician and then spent 4 years in the reserves. He then went to RCA Institutes Inc. and Burroughs Corp. electronics training school/work program from 1958 - 1960. He took a position with Ultronic Systems Inc. in 1961 and in 1963 Bob headed WEST with the company to their San Francisco Montgomery Street office (which changed to GTE then ADP.). After 24 years in the electronic brokerage industry he retired from ADP in February 1985. Bob had been investing in a small bay area cookie company for 8 years and in 1985 he went to work for Otis Spunkmeyer Inc. in San Leandro, CA as their Vice President for Sales and then Manufacturing. In January 1995 he retired from Otis Spunkmeyer. His #1 retirement gift from the company was a round of golf with Johnny Miller the day after the AT&T at Pebble Beach golf course on February 6, 1995. He loved golf but was really hooked on golf after that...
Bob and Bev met July 1963 and married on 8/29/1965 in San Mateo, CA and purchased their first home in San Francisco and lived there 6 years before moving to Walnut Creek, CA in 1971 to raise their 3 sons, Rob(1967), William(Woody)(1968) and Sean(1970) in order to be out of the SF summer fog and wearing winter jackets in the summer. Bob and Bev were always involved with their sons schools (Castle Rock, Dorris Eaton and DLS), and Youth sport activities. Even with his busy work and travel schedule, Bob coached on of their Little League or Soccer teams and was always there to help them practice.
When Bob retired we purchased a home in Incline Village, NV (God's Country) and loved everyday of our 15 years there. We were active members of St. Francis Assisi Catholic Church and Bob the Knights of Columbus (4th Degree). Bob joined the Incline Village Golf Club, playing golf almost daily. HE LOVED THE GAME. In winter they would carpool to golf at Genoa or Reno. In 2009 we returned to Walnut Creek, still in good health as 3 stories in the snow became hard, "You do not have to shovel rain". We became active again in our St. John Vianney Catholic Church, being members there before the orange carpet.
Bob ran and finished 3 marathons, the last being in 1991 at age 56 finishing in 4 hours and 27 minutes. He was diagnosed with 3 cancers in 2014. He put up a great fight and had quality of life to the end, but the cancer won. He played his last game of golf on 9/21/2020 ending with a great game for him.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Helen, brother Bill and sister Pati. He is survived by his sister Virginia, wife of 55 years Bev., Sons: Rob(Jess), Woody (Michelle), Sean and grandchildren Willow (Carlo) and Bowen.
Thank you to Kaiser Oncology department, Dr. K (retired) and his new doctor, Dr. K. and the wonderful oncology nurses who guided him through his #117 treatment with love and caring compassion.
