passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 8, 2024, in Vallejo, California at age, seventy-two.
Tangela was born on June 30, 1952, in San Francisco California to Fred Edward and Dorothy Jean Dixon. At an early age Tangela was tenacious, defining her purpose in life against insurmountable odds. She was and will always be the definition of dependable, generous, patient, courageous, responsible, gentle, and loving.
Tangela was an athlete taking part in school organized sports and was one of the fastest runners on the Track and Field team in high school. After graduation from Woodrow Wilson High School in San Francisco on January 26, 1971; Tangela married Donald L. August on October 6, 1972, in San Francisco, California. Shortly after Tangela and Donald moved to Riverside, California where they welcomed their only son Donnell L. August on November 16, 1973.
Tangela and her son moved back to San Francisco, and she continued her education attending Bayview Hunters Point College and graduating on June 2, 1974. On February 17, 1977, Tangela with Duane B. Allen welcomed their only daughter Kimberly R. Allen. Sharing her strong beliefs in the teachings of religion with her children, the family became a member of the Calvary Hill Baptist Church in San Francisco where Tangela was baptized on January 13, 1980.
Talented she was. Tangela loved sharing her art of drama and dance. Teaching drama and choreographed African styled dance to youth which included her two youngest siblings’ Clovis and George, who performed her art in talent shows in the Bayview District and Potrero Hill House. She sang in a group, with two friends Carolyn and Pamela. In the comfort of her home, she enjoyed sharing another talent drawing photorealism images.
Ambitious, Tangela attended Hill Haven Corporation Nurse Assistant Certification course graduating on September 25, 1985, and worked for Hill Haven as a Nurse Assistant taking great care of patients. Due to a bus accident Tangela decided to go back to school enrolling in the Hilltop Beauty School, Inc. Tangela was one of the best braiders known for creating braid styles way before her time and graduated with a license in Cosmetology on April 14, 1989.
In 1992, before leaving Cala Foods where Tangela prepared hot bar foods. She received her license as a foster parent for the Department of Social Services in San Francisco and accepted a position at the Department of Parking and Traffic on June 22, 1992. In August 1996, Tangela started a non-profit organization in her late son’s name, “LeDoursey Gone but Not Forgotten Foundation”. Tangela will be known for her philanthropic work serving the community she raised her children in. Creating a support group for the families of victims from gun violence. Using her own money for food drives, providing families with bags of groceries and necessities. Giving impact statements at prisons to prisoners convicted of violent crimes. Knocking of the doors of mothers like her who lost their son; or daughter to gun violence.
After voluntarily winding down her non-profit organization 2006; Tangela decided after twenty-seven years of service. She retired from the Department of Parking in Traffic on her birthday, June30th in 2018.
As it has been said, Tangela is the glue that held her family together. Tangela was selfless and cared about the needs of others; she has been the central source of strength, support, stability, and security for her family. I would like to send a salute to the family Anchor...
Tangela leaves behind her daughter, Kimberly R. Allen and son-in-law Malcolm M. Mabrey Sr., her grandchildren Tangenay and Makaela Mabrey, Mahaj and Nahzyi Mabrey, and Donnika August. Her siblings Debra Henderson, Adrian Dixon, Lisa Dixon, Fred Dixon Jr., Anthony Brewster, Clovis Benjamin, and George A. Brewster. Nieces Shinoda Bowser, Makiba Brown, Malorie Branch, Loran Anderson, Evangela Brewster, Dorothy Brewster, Taleria and Janita Brewster. Nephews Calvin Bowser, Larry Brown, Randy Brewster, Anthony Brewster Jr., Esau Brewster, Otis Brewster, Cenious Brewster, David and Daniel Benjamin. A great granddaughter, great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
Tangela was preceded in death by her only son Donnell L. August. Her father Fred E. Dixon, her mother Dorothy J. Brewster, grandmothers Zerline Dixon and Geneva Williams, grandfathers Ora C. Dixon and Herman Williams. Her sisters Renee Dixon, Valeria Love and Phyllis Brewster. Her brother Randy Brewster. Her niece Lailonnie Boyd and nephew Ronaldo Bowser.
Tangela you are, “Gone and will Never be Forgotten.” Your devotion, guidance, and love will be memories to ALL you have touched. There is no one like you; you are ONE of a kind. We love you too.
