Charles Hollister Single

Charles H. Single (Chuck), age 100, died August 6, 2026 at his home in San Jose, California. He was born one of four children to Walter J. Single and Elizabeth H. Single. Charles graduated from St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph Michigan in 1944 and then enrolled in the US Navy at 18 years old to serve in the Philippines. After his honorable discharge, he married his wife of 54 years, Geraldine Z. Single in 1947, and their first child, Cora Lou, was born in 1949. Charles earned a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering at Michigan State University and went on to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania to work for Westinghouse in the Nuclear Submarine Division. There in 1951 their second child, Steven E. Single was born. In 1955 He moved his family to Pleasant Hill, California where he worked for Beckman Instruments until 1962. In 1962 the family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he worked for Applied Dynamics until he retired.

His hobbies were archery, serving in his church, singing in the church choir, and travelling to spend time with his family. After the death of his wife in 2003, Chuck moved to Dexter Michigan

in 2005 where he was a member of St. James Episcopal Church. Chuck moved later to Los Gatos, California in 2018 to live with his daughter.

Chuck is survived by his sister, Mary Ellen Single Alden, daughter Cora (Kip) Single Jones (Walt), son Steven E. Single (Patricia) and seven grandchildren: Scott A. Jones (Kimberly), Randall K. Jones (Jennifer), Kathryn S. Bennett (Kit), Lewis P. Single (Bethany), Elizabeth S. Burbidge (Jonathan) and Nathan E. Single (Beisi), and seven great-grandchildren.

Four generations met together in June of 2026 to celebrate Chuck’s 100 birthday and honor him for loving us all so well throughout his life. There will be multiple celebrations of his life in both San Jose, California and Dexter, Michigan dates yet to be determined.
