Kate was born on March 20, 1962 to Sylvia and Francis King in Duarte, California. She attended Temple City High School where she participated on the tennis team, played violin in the orchestra, and excelled in reading and math. After graduating from high school in 1980, she attended California State Polytechnic (Cal Poly) University Pomona and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering in 1984.
Kate met Marc while they were engineering students at Cal Poly Pomona. Kate and Marc married in 1984 and went on to have two children, Nick and Elaine.
Shortly after becoming a mother, Kate left her engineering career to devote her time to caring for her children. She was a loving mother who cultivated a sense of adventure in her children by taking them on long road trips during the summer, camping, and exploring national parks.
Kate had a second career as a teacher at Jefferson Middle School in San Gabriel, California, where she taught for 14 years. In 2017, Kate retired from teaching and spent her time caring for family, volunteering, walking along the beach, playing with her cats Julius and Minerva, listening to music, and playing the piano.
Kate is predeceased by her parents and brother Gerald (Gerry) King. Kate is survived by her husband, Marc Potter; her two children, Nicholas (Nick) Potter and Elaine Potter; and her three siblings, Suzanne Baumann, William (Bill) King, and Daniel (Dan) King.
Kate was known for her joyful spirit, strength, and compassion. She made you feel special and loved, and will be sorely missed by those who knew her. Kate led with her heart and always put her family first.
We welcome all that knew her to join for a celebration of life at her and Marc’s home on March 1st at 12pm. A private, family only memorial service will be held prior to the celebration of life.
