Gary Joe Roughton

Gary Joseph Roughton passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 2:30 p.m. in Hemet, California.

Gary graduated from McLoud High School before pursuing his lifelong passion for higher education. He attended Oklahoma State University and the University of Central Oklahoma, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Teaching. He advanced his studies by earning a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership and went on to achieve a Doctorate of Education from the University of Southern California. Gary dedicated the majority of his career to the Val Verde School District, where he impacted countless lives and ultimately retired as the Director of Child Welfare and Attendance.

Gary shared a beautiful life with his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Linda, for 44 wonderful years. Outside of his career, Gary was a passionate sports fan. He loved watching his sons play ice hockey during their high school years and never missed a chance to catch a hockey game on television. He was also an avid fan of the University of Oklahoma Sooners football team and faithfully watched every single game.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; his two sons, Matthew and Michael; his daughter-in-law, Gemise; and his cherished grandchildren, Marley and Zephyr. He also leaves behind his three sisters, Debbie, Tammy, and Melissa.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
