Malcolm Lyall Sinclair
On June 14, 2021, Malcolm Lyall Sinclair of Palm Desert passed away at the age of 80. Born on August 28, 1940 in Ladysmith, South Africa, Malcolm was the son of George Lyall Sinclair and Edna Mabel Hayward. He grew up in Ladysmith with his parents and two sisters, Glenda and Hazel.
On October 19, 1963, Malcolm married Sheila Kathleen Greenland, a marriage which lasted 57 years until Sheila’s passing in February 2021. They had two children, Fiona and Barry, both born in Durban. Malcolm, Sheila and their children immigrated to the United States on December 20, 1968, where they made a home in Southern California, first in Downey, then Los Alamitos and finally retiring in Palm Desert.
Malcolm was the Chief Financial Officer for Ameron Federal Credit Union for more than 30 years. He pioneered the ability for credit unions to have share drafts, or checking accounts, for their members. He was the valedictorian for the Credit Union National Association management school in 1981
Malcolm was a natural athlete, who met Sheila playing field hockey, did Scottish highland dancing, loved aerobics classes in the 80s, played tennis at Old Ranch Country Club and played every good golf course.
Malcolm and Sheila retired to Palm Desert Greens in 2000, where they lived for more than 20 years. They made many great memories making friends and playing golf. Malcolm was on the PDG Board as the Treasurer for many years and was central to the great quality of life in that community. Malcolm and Sheila were also active members of and volunteers at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church.
Malcolm was the best husband and father. He was devoted to his family, and always made them feel loved and supported. He was a loyal friend who took care of everyone. He was known for his wicked sense of humor and was always good for a dirty joke. Malcolm and his family’s immigrant story was the embodiment of the American Dream. He was a patriot who put up the flag every day.
Malcolm cared for his beloved wife for more than five years as her health declined. He never left her side and said goodbye to her on Feb 11, 2021. He missed her terribly and his health deteriorated in the following months. They had a beautiful love story, and are reunited in heaven.
Malcolm is survived by his son Barry Sinclair; his daughter Fiona Everett, married to Chris Everett; his grandchildren Hannah (married to Enrique), Connor, Jasmine (married to Austin) and Chris II.
Malcolm led a brave, adventurous, fun-filled and radiant life. He was the best father, papa, uncle, brother and friend. He was dearly loved and will be missed so much.
