She was known by many names and titles. Irene, Rita, Friend, Sister Joseph Michael, Auntie, Nina, Mick, Daughter, Sister... She mostly went by Irene.
Irene was born in Los Angeles California on June 8, 1939. She was the youngest daughter of Cornelia and James Bennett.
She was raised in Inglewood where she attended St. Mary’s Academy. After graduation she entered the novitiate, took her final vows in August 1964 and became Sister Joseph Michael of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Though her order dispensed in early 1970, she remained active in the Immaculate Heart Community.
She found a career using her cooking and organizing talents as coordinator, cook and manager in commercial food services.
She remained a dedicated contributor to her community, volunteering and offering her many talents. She was a wood worker, carpenter, seamstress and cook.
She loved to travel, was keeper of family history and avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan. Keeper of secrets, a real ‘do it yourselfer’, lover of scotch, hater of broccoli (well, strong dislike). Her stories would usually include family history.
She was beloved by many, the Duerst, Chavez, Bennett and Krieger families and their extended families, all called her theirs’.
She was preceded in death by her sister Patrica (Gary Krieger), brother Vincent Bennett (Betty) and brother Donald Bennett.
A funeral will be held at a later date as to allow her large and loving family and friends to gather from near and far to celebrate her life.
