Van (Dennis) Roy Troxell, known to everyone who loved him as Dennis, passed away on July 31, 2026, at the age of 78.
Dennis was born on March 5, 1948, in Grants Pass, Oregon. Throughout his life, he was known for his strength, his quick wit, and the ornery sense of humor that kept family and friends laughing. He never met life halfway. Whether he was serving his country, building motorcycles, entertaining crowds, or spending time with those he loved, Dennis lived with determination and a spirit all his own.
Dennis proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. His service to his country was a source of pride throughout his life. After returning home, he built a long and dedicated career with NASA, where his hard work, knowledge, and commitment earned the respect of those who worked alongside him.
Outside of work, Dennis had a passion for motorcycles. He loved building them, working on them in the garage, and riding whenever he had the chance. He enjoyed creating things with his hands and took pride in every project he tackled.
One of the chapters of Dennis’s life that brought him the most joy was the time he and his wife, Renee, owned a restaurant at Calico Ghost Town. There, Dennis became known to countless visitors as “Rattlesnake,” his beloved Old West character. Together, he and Renee were part of a family of western characters who brought the spirit of the Old West to life. His humor, personality, and ability to make people laugh made him a favorite among guests, and many looked forward to seeing “Rattlesnake” whenever they visited. It was a role that perfectly reflected the fun-loving, mischievous man so many came to know and love.
Above all, Dennis loved his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Renee Troxell, and his children, Stan, Makana, Mojave, and Brandy. His love, guidance, humor, and unwavering presence will continue to live on in each of them.
Dennis will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the way he lived it—with courage, hard work, laughter, a little bit of mischief, and those beautiful blue eyes. Those who knew him will remember his stories, his smile, and the countless moments that made him one of a kind.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
