Kenneth Irwin Scott of Escondido, CA, passed away peacefully in his own bed on Monday, February 7, 2022. His beloved wife Pamela, his partner and best friend of 55 years, was by his side. Ken, the third of four children, was born January 16, 1940, to William Orvis and Orril Mae Scott of Los Angeles, CA. Ken lived his entire life in Southern California. A graduate of Westchester High School in 1958, Ken proudly served in the United States Air Force, attended Santa Monica City College and San Diego State College before graduating from Cal State Northridge with a degree in Business Administration. He then pursued a 35+ year career in banking and finance, moving to San Diego County in 1981.
Ken, known as Grandpa Choo Choo, was a life-long rail enthusiast, photographer, and videographer who loved traveling by train everywhere he went. He was also a model railroader, gardener, woodworker, and handyman who could repair just about anything that needed fixing. Raised in Christian Science, Ken was an active church member his entire adult life. He served in numerous church positions including Sunday school teacher, usher, treasurer, reading room librarian, and executive board member.
Ken was a dedicated father and grandfather who, over the last 25 years, attended (with camera in hand) nearly every school event, graduation, Boy Scout ceremony, JROTC event, musical performance, baseball game, and soccer game he could get to. He was a constant, loving presence for his entire family and a devoted husband to his wife Pamela. Their life together was a model of love and support for their large loving family. Married on February 18, 1967, Ken and Pamela’s marriage was an inspiration to those who knew them. Pamela was his constant companion and the love of his life. Whether camping with his kids in Yosemite Valley or cruising the rails and rivers of Europe, they formed a beautiful partnership.
Ken is survived by his wife Pamela and their four children: Michael, Jeffrey, Jennifer, and William. Other surviving Family members include his sister Marilyn, twelve grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. There will not be a public memorial service, but rather the family will celebrate his life privately at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to one of Ken’s favorite railway preservation museums: Southern California Railway Museum in Perris, CA, or the Western Railway Museum in Rio Vista, CA.
