Richard John Longworth II

Richard Longworth was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, public servant, and friend whose life was defined by service, hard work, generosity, and an enduring love for his family. He passed away surrounded by the love of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Born in San Diego, California, Richard built a life rooted in helping others and taking pride in a job well done. He proudly served in the California National Guard and earned an associate degree through community college. He went on to devote 30 years of service to the Coronado Fire Department, where he served as a firefighter before retiring. Through his courage, reliability, and quiet dedication, Richard made a lasting difference in the community he served.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sherrill Longworth, who passed away in May 2026. Together, they created a close-knit and loving family, and the home and traditions they built remain a treasured part of their legacy.

He is survived by his four children: Richard Longworth III, Robert Longworth, Robbin Longworth-McHenry, and Roberta Longworth, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard loved his family wholeheartedly. He was a dependable source of encouragement, support, humor, and steady guidance, and he never missed an opportunity to make life a little easier or better for those he loved.

A true jack of all trades, Richard was skilled in carpentry, electrical work, and countless other hands-on trades. There seemed to be little he could not repair, build, improve, or figure out. He was always working on a project—especially one for his family—and gave generously of his time and talents to create, fix, and care for the homes and lives of those around him. The results of his work remain as lasting reminders of his resourcefulness, determination, and love.

Richard took joy in gathering family and friends around good food. He loved barbecuing, making Thanksgiving and Christmas special each year by smoking a turkey prepared with care. These holiday meals were more than traditions; they were expressions of his love and a way he brought people together around the table.

He also had a deep appreciation for photography and for preserving meaningful moments. At many family get-togethers, Richard could be found with a camera in hand, capturing the laughter, fun, and joy of the people he loved. His interest in photography also led him to volunteer at the Del Mar State Fair, where he was especially involved with the photography exhibits. Through his photographs, he helped preserve moments that will continue to be treasured for generations.

In addition to his service as a firefighter, Richard worked with the San Diego Padres as a Guest Service Representative, offering visitors and fans the same friendly, helpful spirit that defined him in every part of his life. He also volunteered his time to help man the grills at the annual IAWP beach event, always willing to step in, lend a hand, and help make the occasion meaningful for others.

Richard will be remembered for a life of service, the strength of his character, his capable hands, his generous heart, and the tremendous love he gave to his family. His legacy lives on through the traditions he created, the memories he captured, the projects he completed with care, and the many people whose lives were made better by his kindness.

He will be deeply missed and forever loved.
