Ruby Mitchell, age 90, passed away the morning of December 18th of natural causes. She was born September 6th, 1934 in Wewoka, Oklahoma to Roy and Mary Brumley. She graduated in 1952 from Yuma High School, Arizona. She interned at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, Illinois, where she graduated three years later as a registered nurse. This was also the year she married her husband, Richard Mitchell. They remained married for sixty-nine years this last August.
Dedicating her life to the aid of others, she moved to Escondido in 1958 where she served in the Graybill Clinic as Dr. Graybill’s personal nurse. She also worked at Palomar Hospital, where she was a nurse in the emergency room for six years. In 1989 she moved to Newport, Oregon where she continued her career at the Newport Hospital Emergency Room until her retirement in 1995. In 2019 she and Richard returned to Escondido to once again be with family.
A devout Christian, Ruby attended Emmanuel Faith Community Church while living in Escondido, and the First Baptist Church while in Newport. She continued her life’s work of helping others through her church, being active in the children’s programs, especially Awana.
In her free time Ruby was an avid gardener, quilter, and card crafter, with her efforts often being found for sale in local stores.
Ruby is survived by her husband, Richard Mitchell, and two children, Scot Mitchell and Stacy Woodruff, as well as three grandchildren: Joel and Sara Mitchell, and Samantha Woodruff. She is also survived by her brothers, Leroy and Carl Brumley, and sisters, Silvia King and Lavern McClendon.
A service will be held on January 4th, 2:00PM, at Woodland Village (975 Woodland Pkwy, San Marcos, CA 92069) for those who wish to pay their respects.
