We will all miss Suzanne, who had such a passion for life and adventure.
She is now surfing the waves and walking the beaches of Heaven with many of our other family and friends who have passed over before.
Suzanne Dean Anderson of San Diego, California, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, July 18, 2026, at the age of 64. She was born on July 9, 1962, in Cleveland, Ohio. She grew up in Ocean City, New Jersey.
She graduated from Richard Stockton State College in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science. She later graduated from Auburn University in 1996 with a Master of Science.
She was a scientist and an adventurer who worked as a bench chemist, an environmental consultant, a commercial fisherman in Alaska, first manager of the Oxbow Medows Environmental Learning Center in Columbus, Georgia, followed by a 20-year career at the University of San Diego California (UCSD) as the Director of Undergraduate Teaching Laboratories until her retirement in 2019.
She loved her family. She was proud of her two children. She loved her friends both old and new. She loved to surf, sail, and travel. She had a passion for helping others including multiple trips to Africa where she was a volunteer at orphanages and hospitals.
Throughout her life, she was also an avid small plane pilot with many solo flights including island hopping from Oahu to other Hawaiian Islands while living there in the 1990s. In retirement, she even learned to fly a helicopter.
She was preceded in death by her parents Gertrude and James Dean of Ocean City, New Jersey, as well as her younger brother Greg Dean.
She is survived by her husband Albert Moulton Anderson, daughter Lindsey Davis Anderson, son Sumner James Anderson, and brother James Dean.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life at El Camino Memorial Encinitas, 340 Melrose Ave, Encinitas, CA on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at 3:00 PM.
