Bill is survived by his wife, of 55 years, Joan Marie Whalen, also 80. Oldest Daughter,
Pamela Joan Winship, with Son Tyler John 25, and Daughter, Ally Marie 23, and
Oldest Son, Damon William, living in Richmond, VA. Daughter Shannon Anne and
Husband, Nick Curto, and Son, Kai William 14. Younger Son, Commander Adam
John Barry and Wife, Ada Stanford and daughter, Naomi Aja 3, also Suzie Marie 22
and Hunter James 20, and last of all his Beloved African Grey Parrot, Hoggie Boggie!
28! A Female Bird, with the Vocabulary of a five year old, that, also, lays eggs!
Born June 19th,1943 only child to Mildred Pauline Gaydos Barry and William
Edward Barwikowski, he attended Catholic School at St Peters and St Pius ,in
McKeesoort, PA. In 9th Grade he attended George Washington Middle School, where
Jo saw him, for the first time, walking across the school yard, for, when they were
just 14! Next came three very active years, at the McKeesport Tiger High School!
Interested in Public Speaking, track, and excelling in the shot putt, as well as
attending the Football and Basketball Games, kept him busy! He and Jo, only ever
shared one Class! “Problems of Democracy!”, because neither did well in French Class!
Both Graduated in May of 1961, in a large class of 956 students.
In fall of1961-62 he started College at Dayton University. He went a year and a
half, and realized he was not that interested, and after doing concrete construction,
decided to take a job, in the Texas Panhandle, selling Collier’s Encyclopedias. In
Amarillo, he was arrested once, and spent his only nite ever in Jail! Waiting for the
Boss to Bail him out. In1994 he returned to western Pa and Joined the USA Navy
Reserves, . . after receiving a Notice of USA Army Draft! Eisenhower was getting
ready, for entering into war, to help Vietnam. It was a Very Wise Decision! The
Longer time in Reserves, the better your paycheck was in the Navy!
1964 - 67 After more ordinary jobs: Eversoft soft water sales, Fuller Brush sales,
6 months, Declana Heavy Construction, as laborer and then a layoff, a better job at
United States Steel Corporation- National Tube Division, worked from laborer to a
skilled welder. Met Joan at a Party and asked her for first date, September 7th, 1965,to
see movie “Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines! “, in Pittsburgh. After
a kiss or two, the two officially started dating, and Bill left the mill to re-continue
college at Youngstown State! He worked Sears for Nice Extra Money! He always had
Confidence and was always Positive! Bill was well liked for his Great Sense Humor!
1968 - March 16th, Bill and Joan were married at St Peters Church, the same
church they had made First Holy Communion in 1950 together, not knowing each
other then. They had a three night Honeymoon at the Taft Hotel, in Time Square, in
New York City [ The Big Apple!] and it was all Good. He attended the Naval Academy,
August and September, being Accepted to the Navy ROTC program at college.
1969-70 Bill Graduated with a Degree of Industrial Merchandising and Public
Relations. With a 3.13 grade average! Jo was 5 months pregnant at the time!
October16th 1969 Pamela Joan Barry was Born and 2 weeks later Bill becomes a
Commissioned Ensign in the US Navy and Receives orders to Hunters Point, San
Francisco CA.to the U.S.S. Kennebec AO-36, which was decommissioned in 9 months!
1970-72 Stationed – Long Beach Naval Ship Yard, CA. aboard the U.S.S Wichita
AOR – 1 Bill flew to Da Nang, to meet the ship, for his first tour, flown out by
Helicopter, and dropped down, in a Bowson’s Chair! He did one, 9 monther, and
when he returned in March, Jo had the Christmas tree set up on their Bed!
1973 – 74 Bought first home in Indianapolis, Sept 16, 1973. Shore Duty as
Naval Recruiter, introduce in Public Speaking. Also, September 30th, 1973, our son
Damon William was born at Methodist Hospital. Bill retired his Navy Commission as
a Lieutenant, with outstanding performance reviews!
1974 – 79 Mr. Robert Baker, personally recruited Bill, to join the Bob Baker
Chevrolet Group, in Indy. He managed the Leasing Dept and became the Finance
Manager also. April 21st,1975 Our Daughter, Shannon Anne, was Born at St
Elizabeth’s Hospital. She stood up, at 2 weeks old, holding Jo’s fingers, a very Strong
and Healthy little girl! 22 months later, Adam John, our Youngest Son, was also born
healthy, June 7th, 1977. Bill worked long hours, and Jo and the Kids in the Summer,
spent many hours in the big back yard, with the garden, swing set and sand box , next
to the beautiful fields of fresh corn! And it was so Good Indeed!
Bill or William, In The Bible Means “ The PROVIDER !” And He Definitely Was That!
He Never Quit, Never Got Depressed, or Gave Up! Jo did What he Wanted! They
Packet up, Moved, Made new Friends, and Their Story was their Own Form of the
American Dream! They bought 3 homes in Indiana, one in Maryland, one in Texas,
and this one, on San Miguel Ave, Lemon Grove . . they have lived in 15 years, since
Aug 4th 2008,when they got the key to 6983 San Miguel Ave, and Very Happily started
Cleaning and Painting to movein, with Wire Hair Terrier, Patrick on September,29th!
Bill worked for Bob Baker, sold Health Ins, Pet Products, redid a sailboat, went
to 18 Years of Padre Games, and learned to Detail Cars, with Hand Painted Stripes &
and factory colored Pin Stripes! In 1998, He Independently started his own Company!
Naming it “Stripe It Rich!” For 25 Years He worked for 20 San Diego Body Shops,
Always showing up, some years driving 30,000, adding Clear Coat, to his, product
line, and for only selling his Ram Van,& the Business, 3 Months Ago! God Luv Him!
